The Gadjits.
An interview with Brandon from 18/8/00.
1. How much do you brothers fall out with each other and how does Hilary
put with you?
i will say this...when brothers fight it is the most inane drivel in the
universe. They begin fighting about something and end fighting about fighting
and each others fighting styles. I feel for hilly..i really do...she is
strong.
2. Why did your original keyboard player Heidi leave?
she got a great big scholarship to boston university. We could not stand
in
the way of somehting like that. :)
3. Does the band not like the UK or something! cos firstly you were
supposed
to play with the slackers then the pietasters in England, what's happened?
We seem to be cursed. actually it may be blessing....when we finally
do
manage to coalesce a tour of europe and the british isles out of pure vapor,
we should be in peak performance condition. Perhaps God would like us to
make
a good first impression so he chooses to sabotage any premature attempt
we
make to cross the atlantic preferring instead, to keep us in training here
in
the colonies until we are a leaner, more streamlined and savage army.
4. You may not have graced us with your presence, but your CD's have been
well received, so whats the plans for the rest of the year and 2001?
more work i hope. :) Another album and a million more miles of touring
and
then perhaps some time off to get sulky and remember that time off eats
shit.
5. What are your favourite bands?
I adore elvis costello. The stones, stax and motown stuff, blur and elastica,
AC DC is another big one. oh yeah...ska....hmmm....the bodysnatchers are
by
far my fave of the two tone era....toots....hepcat and the slackers are
wonderful.
6. What are your best TV shows?
The simpsons are funny as hell. The daily show on comedy central.
7. Whats you ambition in life?
to do this (write songs and perform them) forever.
8. Best childhood memory?
There is a nice first kiss one....one where my brothers and i got caught
smoking and drinking in the attic....most of the best ones involve my
grandfather though. His limericks and foul-mouthed driving. BUying me my
first electric guitar.
9. What's it like being on Hellcat?
I would guess it is the same as most other labels. There are some very
close
friends of mine there though....so that is how it is diffrent i suppose.
I
don't think it is so common for artists to have close relationships with
the
label folks. At least nota big label. most big label people i have met
are
rather adversarial with their labels.
10. Finally How did you get into ska?
I have a very short attention span and i was at the time, very bored with
sound-alike punk rock. This would have been a year or so before green day
went big int he states. There were a few cool ska records floating around
and
they caught my attention and then there was enough substance in ska
insofar
as lots of records of diffrent eras and lots of brand new bands forming,
that
i got fairly immersed. NOwadays i have sold off alot of crap records i
bought
over the last few years and kind of narrowed the whole thing down to a
few
artists or albums that i really like.
Thanks for your time.
no, thank you for yours. :)
