10 MAN MARLOW EASE THROUGH TO QUARTER-FINAL

Abingdon Town 1 Marlow United 2

Marlow United overcame the unfortunate sending of James Flint on 33 minutes with a magnificent second half performance to progress into the quarter final of the Berks and Bucks Cup.

The dismissed Player left the field with blood streaming from a cut above the eye, inflicted by a stray elbow after a challenge for the ball with Abingdon’s Wells.

The player expressed his disgust forcibly to the match official and received his marching orders for abusive language.

Until the dismissal the half had been a fairly even affair, the home team using the slope to their advantage, with the United back four and Ian Green returning at centre back after injury having to be alert, and Doug Buchanan and Dan Pedley restored to the midfield after Saturdays disappointing defeat at Pegasus Juniors.

United began the game in determined fashion, Pedley releasing Brown on 4 minutes only for keeper Brewerton to clear the danger.

Abingdon nearly snatched the lead on 11 minutes with Mott firing a shot against the bar after his run stretched the United defence as the home team began to gain the upper hand.

Captain Chris Rowley hit the base of the post with an effort shortly before Flint found himself in the book along with Abingdon’s Wells after they clashed on 23 minutes. Bloomfield fired over for Abingdon after being put through, the same player blazing a free kick over the bar minutes before Flint got his marching orders on 33 minutes after another clash with Wells resulted in a facial injury.

United almost snatched the lead on 45 minutes after a Pedley cross was cleared off the line and Buchanan then fired wide from the corner.

Lee Ovens then found himself in the book for a late challenge and from the free kick  Abingdon’s Bloomfield fired over from 8 yards.

HT 0-0

Despite only having ten men  Marlow responded with a superb second half performance in which every player played their part, none more so than the dangerous Lewis Brown who ran the home team back four ragged.

The diminutive forward almost opened the scoring on 50 minutes charging down a clearance before netting the ball only for the referee to over rule the effort for handball.

That only delayed the inevitable opener which arrived a minute later after good play between Dan Pedley and Doug Buchanan released Brown behind the defence the Marlow forward slotting the ball past advancing keeper Brewerton.

A tiring Pedley was replaced by Ollie Flint on 70 minutes and the Marlow youngster was immediately involved in the action as he burst past last defender Beauchamp who promptly bought down the player down. To the astonishment of the Marlow bench the referee only produced a yellow card as the defender was carried of on a stretcher, a victim of his own tackle.

The resultant free kick was eventually fired wide but it was the away team who were creating the chances with the impressive Buchanan hitting the bar on 80 minutes. The same player scored the second goal with a rising shot from 18 yards after a corner on the right was only partially cleared on 86 minutes.

Marlow sub Adam Lanaway almost snatched a third in injury time just losing out to Brewerton in the chase for the ball.

Abingdon then pulled back a goal in the 3rd minute of injury time with Bloomfield netting from close range from a corner but United held out for the final minutes.
