CORBETT EARNS MARLOW A POINT
FTL FUTBOL HELLENIC
PREMIER DIVISION
Marlow United 2 Binfield 2
Marlow earned a deserved point against surprise team Binfield; currently sitting in second place in the league, when midfielder Greg Corbett converted Ollie Flint’s cross after a good build up, using his chest to guide the ball over the goal line on 85 minutes.
It was nothing more than United deserved having been the dominant team in the second half and having seen a perfectly good goal not given as a Tristan Heywood header was adjudged not to have crossed the line after 29 minutes of the game.
Playing on a bone hard pitch it was the away team who threatened first, Gumbes picking up a flick from Millward only to be smothered by the United defence.
Marlow hit back with a vengeance taking the lead on 4 minutes.
A flowing move involving five players ended up with the ball being played into the feet of Andy Nichol, the big centre forward slotting the ball past keeper Adams from 12 yards.
Marlow looked to double that lead with Corbett unable to control the ball as he ran into the area and Leigh Mason firing in a shot after Nichol won a header.
Binfield certainly weren’t passive and Gumbs fired over following a free kick and Lee Ovens was on hand to clear yet another free kick as the home team conceded too many fouls.
Binfield’s Lilley was shown a yellow on 17 minutes for what appeared an innocuous foul with Nichol‘s header from the resultant free kick just missing the target.
Nichol then showed determination in winning several challenges, his cross finding Leigh Mason who in turn played the ball into the area only for Adams to collect.
Binfield then equalised out of the blue when Moore rode three challenges before finding an unmarked Danny Wing in the area, the forward scoring with a low shot past Murray.
Buoyed by this success the Berkshire team took the lead on 26 minutes.
With the home defence static a short free kick was played to Fenton who lashed home a 30 yard screamer leaving Murray grasping thin air.
Marlow hit back and when Ollie Flint was fouled on 29 minutes Jon Masons free kick appeared to be drifting out only for Dan Pedley to pull the ball back across the area where Captain Tristan Heywood headed the ball onto the inside of the post and to all intents and purposes across the line where keeper Adams scrambled across to collect only for the officials to wave play on.
Marlow’s Webb found himself in the book for arguing as the incident threatened to overshadow the home team’s performance.
Leigh Mason and Nichol both had efforts on goal before Binfield almost snatched a third, Rogers skipping round Heywood with Gumbs unable to reach his cross.
Jon mason became the third booking of the game for a late tackle before the half ended with Nichol being ruled offside from Flint’s through ball.
HT 1-2
United began in attacking mode with Flint winning the ball in Binfield’s area and firing wide from a prone position.
Soon after Gumbs fired over for Binfield before a Filmore free kick was caught by Adams.
By now the game was being played at a frantic pace and Marlow were indebted to Lee Ovens, his superb tackle on Suarez foiling a dangerous break.
Leigh Mason embarked on a mazy dribble his final shot being blocked as the home team ratched up the pressure.
Ovens became another booking for a heavy tackle before Filmore fired wide when well placed.
Pedley was another booking for a dangerous tackle as United continued to look for the equaliser Murray saving Withers free kick.
With an hour gone it was all Marlow pressure with Binfield looking to catch out the home defence on the break.
Both Gumbs and Withers had efforts with Filmore becoming yet another booking, this time for dissent, before the home team finally made the breakthrough on 85 minutes.
Again it was a move involving several Marlow players before the ball arrived at the feet of Ollie Flint wide on the right.
His stinging cross was met at full tilt by the advancing Corbett, guiding the ball over the line from close range.
Having equalised United relaxed, allowing Gumbs the opportunity to shot, his effort being blocked.
The same player was then inexplicably caught offside when a cross from the right appeared to open up the home defence.
Marlow hit back and Leigh Mason snatched at an effort from 12 yards the same player beating four players before setting up a chance for Nichol, his shot missing the target.
Manager Kevin Carvell was a trifle despondent at the final whistle stating “We all feel that was two points lost particularly with the ‘goal’ that never was, even the Binfield players admitted the ball was well over the line.
Apart from that we gifted them both goals after looking comfortable at 1-0”
