INJURY TIME COLLAPSE CONDEMNS UNITED

FTL FUTBOL HELLENIC

PREMIER DIVISION

Carterton 4 Marlow United 1

Marlow’s erratic league form continued at Carterton on Saturday as the Bucks team conceded four goals for the second league game running at Kilkenny Lane as a calamitous second half saw United’s one goal lead wiped out

There was no indication of the events to come as the away team took a 33rd minute lead with the best goal of the game.

Dan Pedley began the move, playing the ball to Lewis Brown after a strong run into the area. The Marlow forward back heeled the ball back into the path of Pedley who picked his spot from 10 yards to put United in the driving seat.

Carterton had dominated the early stages of the game as Marlow made their usual hesitant start.

With Mark Doswell slotting into an unaccustomed central defensive position the defence took time to settle and Carterton troubled the back four from several long throws and free kicks.

United’s first real chance came on 18 minutes with a move involving Nick Flint and Doug Buchanan which saw an effort from James Flint cleared with Buchanan picking up the ball and again testing keeper Domm.

The game was now more even as the away team began to see more of the ball and the back four looked more settled.

After taking the lead it was Marlow who were dictating the play, James Flint and Lewis Brown both seeing efforts saved although Carterton threatened from a free kick on 44 minutes which saw Ramsey make his first save of note.

Lee Ovens and Tom Fletcher then found themselves booked after a scuffle as the half closed.

HT 0-1

Marlow began the half by surviving a penalty appeal when Ovens made a last ditch tackle in the area, but then proceeded to take the game to their opponents.

On 48 minutes across from the right by Flint was fired over by Filmore when he really should have hit the target.

Three minutes later it was the marauding Flint again firing in a curling shot that Domm saved.

A further Marlow corner was cleared before Webb pulled the ball back from the right this time to the unmarked Brown, his header hitting the deck and bouncing into the arms of Domm when it seemed he must score.

After surviving these scares Carterton equalised out of the blue as on 58 minutes a free kick swung in from the right evaded the United defence and an unmarked Chris Bowles gleefully headed past a stranded Ramsey from close range.

Ramsey then made a point blank save as Carterton piled on the pressure saving again at the near post seconds later.

Still it looked any ones game as Britnell embarked on a dangerous run, James Flint finishing with a shot that bought an excellent save from Domm.

Marlow took off Pedley and Webb for Lanaway and Cuva as they attempted to regain the imitative.

Despite home pressure by the home team it took another defensive mix up for Carterton to take the lead this time a long ball into the area causing confusion between Britnell and Doswell allowing Bowles the opportunity to slip the ball past Ramsey on 78 minutes.

United hit back with a Doswell header from a corner being cleared off the line before a ball over the Carterton defence found Brown in space.

He advanced on goal and saw his low shot pushed away by a diving Domm thus denying United the equaliser.

That was really Marlow’s last real chance in the game as the home team dominated the last few minutes as with Filmore hampered by a back injury and Buchanan running out of steam after his prolonged absence Carterton were running the midfield.

Two goals in injury time put a gloss on the score line for the home team as sub Williams capitalised first on a Ramsey error as the keeper failed to hold on to a low shot and to rub salt into the wounds the same player fired home a loose ball in the 93rd minute.

A dejected assistant manager Gary Wiltshire said after the game “We did not deserve that result, had we taken our chances we should have gained a point at least. Having said that it’s the second week running we have conceded late goals, we have got to learn to concentrate for the whole of the game”
