MARLOW SLUMP TO DEFEAT
FTL FUTBOL HELLENIC
PREMIER DIVISION
Highworth Town 5 Marlow United 0
Marlow slumped to a comprehensive defeat at Highworth as the home team romped to a 5-0 defeat of their depleted opponents.
Despite Marlow having 8 players absent they fielded what looked a competitive team and travelled hopeful of gaining something from the game.
In truth the score line could have reached double figures as the home team missed a host of chances as they battered a Marlow team who once they fell behind in the third minute never really looked like offering any serious resistance to a rampant Highworth who really could not have expected such an easy game against opponents who sat in 5th position in the league as the game kicked off.
That kick off was delayed by 15 minutes as four of the home team were involved in a car accident on there way to the ground, thankfully no one was seriously injured, but despite this disruption they immediately took the game to their opponents.
In the third minute an attack down the Marlow left resulted in Bennett’s cross being knocked into his own net by Gary Wiltshire.
The home team never looked back from that moment although a Rowley free kick on 7 minutes beat keeper Gill and cannoned of the bar only for Nicol to lose out in the race to guide the ball home.
That was as close as Marlow came to scoring during the game as their midfield simply failed to get to grips with the Highworth movement and passing game leaving the back four under constant pressure.
The fact that it took until 29 minutes for the home team to double the score owed much to luck and poor finishing.
When the goal did arrive it was the dangerous Bennett who received a long ball before rounding his marker and crossing for Hilder to score from close range.
The scorer hit the bar minutes later and then contrived to miss from 3 yards as Bennett’s cross found him unmarked in the box.
Marlow were thankful that the score was a respectable 2-0 as they trooped of at half time.
HT 2-0
Any chance of a come back were dispelled within 2 minutes of the commencement as Bennett volleyed the third with the Marlow defence in disarray.
Marlow had replaced Rowley and Corbett at the break in an effort to get back in the game but the early goal meant that they were just on a damage limitation cause.
That damage only got worse with the 4th goal on 52 minutes as Bennett was felled in the area by Wiltshire, Cooper slotting home the penalty.
United then had 2 players booked, Adam Harman and more significantly Andy Nicol for dissent.
Highworth notched the games 5th goal on 62 minutes as they broke from a rare Marlow corner, man of the match Bennett volleying a cross from the left.
Nicol then found himself sent off needlessly as he swore at the referee on 79 minutes leaving Marlow to see out the final few minutes with 10 men.
The home team saw a goal from Rudd ruled out for offside and Bennett missed from 4 yards with Middleton seeing his lob shot sail over the bar for Marlow as the game finished.
