INJURY TIME AGONY FOR MARLOW

FTL FUTBOL HELLENIC

PREMIER DIVISION

Oxford City Nomads 2 Marlow United 1

Marlow suffered injury time agony at Oxford as the home team snatched two late goals and with it the three points on offer.

With United attempting to see out a total of 8 minutes injury time they conceded an own goal from Scot Benyon who headed past a stranded Murray following a cross from the left and compounded their misfortune three minutes later as Ryan Britnell conceded an unnecessary free kick on the right leading to Nomads Janes scoring the winner.

Manager Kevin Carvell could not hide his disappointment at the result as his team seemed to be heading for a moral boosting, if some what fortunate victory, over newly promoted Nomads.

“I can’t really complain at the final score as they (Oxford) played well and we were on the back foot for much of the second half.

What hurts is the manner of the goals conceded as until Scotty’s own goal you couldn’t really see them scoring and then Ryan gives away a stupid free kick and bang its 2-1, all in injury time.

They were fitter than us and I’m afraid it showed in the end”

The game began in lively fashion with Nomads Janes forcing a fine save from Murray on 3 minutes as he bore down on goal.

A Ryan Britnell ball to Andy Nicol on 5 minutes saw United’s first opportunity, ‘Boxer’ lifting his shot over Barisic and the cross bar of the home goal.

Three minutes later Marlow took the lead, Nicol playing the ball through to Captain Dan Pedley who fired the ball inside the right hand post.

Marlow with stood the pressure as Nomads attempted to pull back the goal and following a move down the right between Mason and Ovens the assistant referee signalled a handball in the area.

Mason fired the resultant penalty low to his left and watched in dismay as Barisic pulled of a fine save.

Marlow were enjoying probably their best spell of the game although they were thankful not to concede after a scramble in the six yard box following a corner on their left which saw Murray finally collect the ball after it had been cleared off the line.

The home team continued to stretch the United defence with some one touch football but again the away team threatened as Buchanan hit his effort wide following a lay back from Nichol who was proving a handful for the home defence.

HT 0-1

Jon Mason fired over from 20 yards in the first minute as Marlow looked to double their lead and four minutes later they probably should have added to their score when Ovens and Ollie Flint combined, the latter’s cross finding the unmarked Paget who miss hit his shot from 10 yards allowing Barisic to save.

The home team hit back with Janes heading onto the cross bar as they pressed Marlow further back and manager Carvell introduced Greg Corbett and Scot Webb for Paget and Buchanan as he attempted to stem the flow.

Nomads manager Jones bought himself on as substitute as he tried to engineer the equaliser from midfield with Carvell playing his final card introducing Lee Dixon for his Hellenic league debut for Mason.

Three minutes later the debutant could have made a name for himself as he found himself one on one with Barisic only to shoot to soon enabling the keeper to smother the shot.

The home team kept up the pressure with the Marlow goal surviving some near misses as Oxford failed to capitalise on their greater possession.

Just as it appeared that they had weathered the storm on 93 minutes Jones played a pinpoint pass to the left and from the resulting cross Benyon headed spectacularly past his own keeper.

Four minutes later Janes snatched all three points for the home team as he scored from close range following a cross from the Marlow left after Britnell rash challenge.

Referee Chris Kidd, who had a fine game, finally called time on 98 minutes much to the delight of the home team and supporters.
