MASON SEES UNITED HOME
FTL FUTBOL HELLENIC
PREMIER DIVISION
Shrivenham - 0 Marlow United - 3
L
A Leigh Mason hat trick secured Marlow their first win on the road as they eventually overcame a spirited Shrivenham team moving themselves into the top half of the league in the process.
The skilful Mason made up for his disappointments of the week end to notch all three goals as the away team eventually ran out comfortable winners.
Shrivenham began the game in determined mood and pressed the United defence back as they attempted to open the scoring, Gill, Sproule and Fitzgerald all testing keeper Ramsey.
Marlow, with skipper Tristan Heywood back in the line up after injury, with stood the early pressure and with Andy Nichol and Leigh Mason combining well it was the away team who looked the more dangerous team.
It was the Nichol, Mason combination who opened up the Shrivenham defence on 21 minutes, Nichol intercepting Aitkenhead’s pass before sending Mason into the area where he evaded two challenges before smashing the ball past keeper Alford.
The lively Fitzgerald fired wide after a good turn on the edge of the box before United doubled their score on 30 minutes.
Filmore’s through ball found Nicholl his pass sending Mason into the box his goal bound shot taking a slight deflection of a defender before finding the back of the net.
At 2-0 the away team continued to contain the efforts of the Shrivenham forwards and the half ended with Marlow comfortably in control.
Ht 0-2
Marlow had the ball in the net after a minute only for Ollie Flint to be ruled offside from Jon Mason’s free kick before Shrivenham began a concerted onslaught on the United goal.
Lee Ovens cleared a ball from the 6 yard box and then from under the cross bar following a shot by Smart as the home team piled on the pressure.
A poor back pass by an otherwise imperious Heywood resulted in a corner with Flannagan firing over.
Saunders then tried his luck from 20 yards but only found the reliable Ramsey who collected the ball with ease before Sproule fired a free kick into the defensive wall and Gill then fired a free kick wide.
Marlow weathered the storm and gradually worked their way back into the game, sealing the result on 74 minutes after Scot Webb was pulled back as he ran into the penalty area, Leigh Mason slotting home the penalty to notch his hat trick this after the away team had seen a strong penalty appeal turned down after Jon and Leigh Mason combined and the ball appeared to be handled in the area by a defender.
Minutes later United saw another penalty decision overturned by the referee; this after the linesman indicted a handball in the area only to be overruled by the ref.
Despite this Marlow continued to control the play, manager Kevin Carvell blooding youngsters Sam Walters and Jamie West in the final 20 minutes of the game.
