Excerpts from the breakfast notebooks:
"2/5
"...So we went to Brownie's ... And there was a truck out in front, too -- a Ryder panel truck with 2 Ryder drivers in company t-shirts. And a Fed-Ex driver in a company jacket sitting alone.
"2/6 Brownie's is good because they don't have a smoking/no smoking section. 'Go ahead and sit where you want, there's no 'no smoking' section,' the waitress said when we walked in, looking all around for the best place to sit - booth or counter? I don't know how the waitress guessed that we'd be interested in smoking -- probably assumed we were hesitating because we were trying to find the little clues that divide a restaurant -- little signs or little ash trays. But it doesn't strike me as smoky there. Maybe nobody else was smoking there, or there were few customers, or a high ceiling. On leaving, David said, 'what I like about this place is those tall windows' and its true, even on an overcast day like Saturday theres a lot of light in there.
"Our pancakes were so yellow! And big and fluffy. Mine had a little tail -- looked like a cartoon word balloon. Wish I'd had a pencil so I could draw it. I've been tempted lately to start drawing local pancakes again, but still something says it wouldn't be good - can't relax and just talk when you're drawing.
"I ordered the 'Eggs Ronaldo' and it was good - a big order of lots of melted cheese on top, chunks of ham a llittle too dry, the whole thing a little too dry so I added some ketchup (what else was there?) But I was really happy with what I ordered. What does 'Eggs Ronaldo' mean anyway?
"David & Barb both got pancakes. David put jelly on his pancakes, Barb was eating hers plain. I'd never noticed that before.
"David was talking about Trailways again - this place reminded him of the truckstop past. Someday we'll have to go there for breakfast so I can see what its all about."
