During the last year it has happened several times that a new version of a chess program doesn't seem to be stronger than it's predecessor. This is the case also for Frans Morsch's latest program. So far we have played 123 games with Fritz 4.0 Pentium 90 MHz. It's preliminary rating is only 2285, which is 79 points worse than for Fritz 3.0 with the same hardware.
The margin of error is about 67 points, so much of the difference could be due to statistical factors. More games will show if this is a correct assumption or not in this case. But the fact that we cannot play automatically with Fritz 4.0 makes it much more time consuming, and perhaps impossible, to get the usual 400-600 games for a new program.
Another effect of the fact that we have to play manually is that Fritz 4.0 so far has met clearly weaker opposition than other PC-programs. Those who play manually usually have a chess computer with ratings between 2100 and 2300 to play against. Testers who own two PCs have now become so adapted to automatic play, that it is somewhat difficult for them to go back to the old way of testing...
Fritz 4.0 is a Windows-program and that makes it slower than a corresponding DOS-program. How much slower, we don't know however.
In the latest Aegon-tournament the three programs from Frans Morsch received an average rating against humans of about 2480. That is clearly a very good result although it's based on only 18 games. It is possible that someone will launch the hypothesis that Fritz is better against humans than against other computers. That could be true for Fritz or any other chess program, but you would probably need several hundred games against humans in order to prove it.
Another new program on this list is Rebel Decade Pentium 90 MHz. This is a freeware program which can be downloaded from Ed Schröder's home page on Internet. Decade is a weakened version of Rebel 6, which among other things lacks the possibility to use large hashtables.
If more and more chess programs are written for Windows and not for DOS, it could become increasingly difficult for SSDF to test them, since Donninger's AUTO232-system doesn't work with Windows-programs. We would be very grateful to someone who could make it possible to play automatically also with chess programs for Windows!
