SUKIE THE CAT POUNCES ON THE MORNING!

A wee tree frog outside,
makes its slow way across the window.
  Safe from Sukie's paw,
if not from her green, watchful eyes.
It has been fun - in a way,
just to trace its travel with her paw,
  but just in a way.

Sukie jumps down from the sofa,
and she races to the patio door,
  and she stands at attention.
She wants out - in caps - OUT!
I, of course, mortal that I am, obey her.

But outside, she hovers on the deck,
and she nudges the railing post a couple times.
OK. already yet, I get the hint.
I grab a jacket and the fish food,
for this is to be a joint excursion.

In a mad jolt, or bolted by joy,
she takes a bounding leap off the deck,
and she pounces on the morning world,
for all that she is worth.
  She spies the fish food,
so she beats me to the fish pond.
  But she will be disappointed,
I have switched to the sinking pellets.
I caught her sampling the floating ones
.....so just to be on the safe side.

Then, making sure that my eyes are on her,
she makes a mad dash up the apple tree,
as if to say, "Hey Pa! Look at me! Wheeee!"
She marks the tree a little more,
as she sharpens her claws with vigor,
  then down she comes,
so she can continue me on her rounds.
For the yard needs checking out-
there might be mice hiding in the leaves,
or a chipmunk playing in the downspout,
and sniffing to do here and there,
to figure out what night visitors were by,
uuum, smells like a possum to me.

The early spring grass is so tender,
just right for a morning salad,
so she nibbles and samples along the way.
Robins keep their wary eyes on her,
she hasn't posed a real threat yet,
but better to be safe than you know what!

  A check of the daffodils,
  drooping from the previous rains,
then a check of the side yard.
Great fun for Sukie if the moles are active,
tunneling mass highways in the lawn,
wonderful to watch the earth move so.
less fun for me as I trample them down,
in disgust and mutter and sputter.

  By now, I am impatient,
I want and need my coffee and toast.
I want in - and in caps - IN ."
Sukie understands and lets me go inside,
and gives me a sweet look as I go in,
a look as if to say, "Thank you, Pa."
