*Disclaimer*
This story is based very closely on a session of an almost-real roleplay on the 5th day of June 2004.
The lyrics are translated from Inner Universe, a soundtrack on the Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex OST. Don't sue me, I didn't even do the translation myself, so I claim no part save inspiration from the song.
As always, thanks go to the ones who influenced the shape of this story.

Broken Road

I am Calling, Calling now, Spirits rise and falling
To stay with you longer...
Calling, Calling, in the depth of longing
I'll remain with you longer...

Nama shouted a warning, but, wide-eyed, he couldn't, or didn't, hear her. He looked around, starting to panic. Behind him, he could see the path he'd already travelled and knew he couldn't go back, he could only move forward. But he couldn't see what was in front of him. It was dark, all chaos, and nothing solid was before him. The path had gradually faded away and he'd barely noticed it. 'No... no, no!' she screamed, but something had blocked the link. He paused, indecision on his face, looked across the chasm and reached out, trying to find the path. He took another step... into empty black. She tried to grab him, but it was no use, the chasm had grown too wide for her to reach him.

Angels and demons circled above me
Breaking through the hardships and starry ways
Only he doesn't know happiness
Because he couldn't understand its calling

Nathan was shocked. So that was how the rumours had started. His 'friend' had promised not to tell. Some friend. It was little consolation in him agreeing that he deserved whatever Nathan wanted to do in revenge.

Stand alone...Where was life when it had a meaning...
Stand alone...Nothing's real anymore and...

There is nothing here; no sound, no light, no wind. He cannot feel anything through the numbness. This place is not.
She watched helplessly as his despair and confusion swallowed him. She was on the wrong side; there was nothing she could do. The link between them faded to a gossamer thin thread as tears slipped slowly down her face. She shivered, suddenly cold. He had gone where she could not go. Without him, there was nothing here, and she didn't know what to do.

...Endless run...
While I'm alive, I can try not to fall while flying,
Not to forget how to dream... how to love
...Endless run...

He seems to drift. Maybe he is falling, but there is no wind. There is nothing but lonely darkness, all around him. "Where am I?" he whispers, but there is no answer; he is inaudible through the endless black. He is not afraid, but he is lonely. He cannot reach the other worlds from here.

Calling, Calling, For the place of knowing
There's more that what can be linked
Calling, Calling, Never will I look away
For what life has left for me
Yearning, Yearning, for what's left of loving

She knows he is still alive, because the link, although thin, has not snapped. So she waits, curling up on the edge, waiting, hoping, asking God for what seems like the impossible. "Please..."
He doesn't want to be alone, in this darkness where no one could reach him and where he can reach no one. He prays.
"Father... I have sinned in my life... I have gone into an endless darkness... show me the light by which I may be saved... to you I commit my faith... save me... bring me to life..."

To stay myself longer...
Calling, Calling now, Spirits rise and falling
To stay with you longer...
Calling, Calling, in the depth of longing
I'll remain with you longer...

Around him, the black slowly turns to white, and then to blue. He looks up. It is the sky, clear, blue and perfect. Looking behind him, he realises that he has been given hope and another chance to continue. Behind him lies the chasm, and in front of him at the edge of the chasm, is Nama. He is no longer separated from her. He senses that maybe there is something in this world that is good. Reaching out, he taps her from behind. She jumps, startled, and he grabs her, holds her tight against him so that she doesn't fall in.
The link flares to life again as she turns around and hugs him tightly. "You're back." The relief in her voice is clear. He smiles lightly. "The Father has shown me hope... given me faith to return, and shown me the light in a place of darkness." He pauses, savouring her smile before continuing, "It wasn't just He who helped me... it was knowing that you will always be there for me. You gave me something to return to." He pauses again, fixing the memory into his mind. "After I fell... I heard you, longing for me... I couldn't continue, knowing that, so I came back. Thanks for being there for me." He knows that is enough, because, as before, her grin promises him, "Always will be."
