Fairmont InvitationalTiger boys track team 2nd, girls 3rd
PUBLISHED: 4/2/2003
Independent Sports Article ST. PETER — The Fairmont Invitational became an outdoor track meet Tuesday, as the Marshall boys finished second and the girls third. In the junior varsity competition (where the 5-7 placings were figured in), Fairmont scored 59.5 points to Marshall’s 54 and Worthington’s 24.5. “It was nice so we ran outside,” Marshall boys coach Mike Jacobs said. “Everything but the hurdles, 4x400 (relay) and the field events.” The Tigers dominated the distance running events, sweeping the first four placings in the 1600 meters and the top three spots in the 3200. Yahya Iman won the 1600 and Akey Jumale won the 3200. “Our distance guys came through,” Jacobs said. “We did pretty good.” Kai Sill was first in the 200 (24.3), second in the high jump (5-foot-8) and was a member of the winning 4x200 relay and the third-place sprint medley relay. “Sill contributed all over the place,” Jacobs said. “Where ever he was, we scored points. It was really a valuable day for him.” Ryan Brunsvold had a personal best to win the shot put (41-5) and Andy Hoffman had a personal best to finish third in the pole vault (8-feet-6). Matt Grabau added seconds in the two hurdle races. “We got some answers,” Jacobs said. “We went in looking for 400 people. It seemed like we had one 57 guy and everybody stuck at 60. We had three times in the 57s today. It took a turn in the right direction ... from a bunch of individuals.” “We saw solid improvements. Even in the hurdles. Our form looked better. The technique is starting to come around. It was a pretty good day.” Alexis Miller placed second in the shot put (30-3/4) and third in the 100 meters (14.28) to pace Marshall. Sarah Wyffels was second in the high jump, while Laura Johnson was third and Haley Meyer fourth in the 3200 run. The 4x200 relay consisting of Meyer, Wyffels, Heather Martin and Miller won with a time of 1:55.7, while the sprint relay finished second. “We made steps forward,” Marshall coach Leo Geraets said. “We are seeing what we are capable of. With the track handy, we ran outside. It was nice to see what we could do on a big track rather than indoors.” “We need to score more consistently up and down the lineup. We are not quite in shape yet. We had promising signs today. We hope that continues.” In the junior varsity competition (placings 5-7), Marshall won with 67 points compared to Worthington’s 41 and Fairmont’s 26.
