MARSHALL — Eighth-grader Laura Johnson continued her early-season excellence for the Marshall Tigers Monday, winning the 1600 run and anchoring the winning 4x400 relay.

Those performances helped the Tigers win their quadrangular on a hot, windy afternoon with 93 points. Montevideo was second with 63 points. Renville County West finished third with 58 points and Lincoln HI was fourth with 41 points..

The athletes didn’t mind the 25 mph wind, which their times and distances, because it made the 90-degree weather bearable.

“It was really hot, and that made (running) hard,” Johnson said. She was timed in 5:54. That’s not far off her personal best, 5:51. A year ago, her best time was 6:18. She’s really picked up the pace.

“I ran in the winter some and in the summer, and that helped,” Johnson said. “Some times I ran with Traci (Pagel).” Pagel finished second in the mile Monday, while Johnson didn’t run both distance events because of the hot weather.

“I like the 16(00) because it’s shorter,” Johnson said. “I hoping to get down to five minutes. Maybe not this year, but in the future.”

“She physically looks stronger in each race,” Marshall coach Leo Geraets said. “She attacks more earnestly.” Kelly Horgan of Lincoln HI was third in the 1600 and Martha Popowski was third in the 3200.

“Today, we didn’t double her up because of the weather. That, and we were looking to see what she could do in one race,” Geraets said. Johnson anchored the mile relay. Haley Meyer, Pagel and freshman Megan Gannott were also on the relay.

“There were a couple of kids in that race that we could use,” Geraets said. “It’s been a tough event to fill, but today we found a couple of answers. Megan held on with the girl from Lincoln. When Laura got (the baton), she’s like a bulldog. When she gets the lead, she hates to give it up.”

The Tigers went 1-2 in the discus as freshman Ashley Schwartz won it at 76-feet-3, and Amber Buysse was second at 75-feet-9.

“Those two were promising,” Geraets said. “Being (Ashley’s) a first timer, that’s a good place to start.” In the shot put, Alexis Miller of Marshall won with a toss of 32-feet-2, while Buysse came in second at 31-feet-7 1/2 inches.

Sarah Wyffels of the Tigers added a first in the long jump and a second in the high jump.

“That’s her best of the year,” Geraets said. “She’s been pretty consistent. She needs to stay at that level to keep placing.

“Our field events came through with a stronger showing today. From top to bottom, we looked more like a team. We need to get out of the lower-level echelon and need to move up.”

Marshall’s Heather Martin won the triple jump. Brittany Pedersen of Lincoln HI battled RCW’s Heather Smith in the 200 meters. Smith was clocked in 28.31 and Pedersen in 28.34.

“In the last 100 (meters), she gained on me,” Pedersen said. “We were even for a little bit. Right around the corner, there was the wind.” It was the first outdoor race for Pedersen this year. The junior has a career-best 27.0 in the section meet, placing fourth a year ago. She was held out of the 100 and entered the 4x200 and 4x100 relays.

“I don’t usually run those two relays,” Pedersen said. “I can do better; there’s room for improvement.” In the 400, Lincoln went 1-2 as Ashley Nuese was the winner in 1:09.93 and teammate Camy Veischelde was second in 1:11.2.

Brittany Barber of the Rebels was second in the long jump and third in the shot put, respectively.

Marshall’s next action is Thursday at the Willmar Invitational.

MARSHALL — Marshall’s Yahya Iman was running with the wind Monday.

In his duel with Montevideo’s Greg Liebl — both were in last year’s state cross country meet — Iman was amazing on his own track. Iman ran a 4:31.77 to outlast Liebl and win the 1600. Liebl finished in 4:38.32.

“I was expecting that to be the premier race of the day,” Marshall coach Mike Jacobs said. “I don’t think Liebl knew what hit him.” Iman’s time was one second off the Marshall school record — set by Pete Harney (4:30).

“We didn’t know he was smoking that much,” Jacobs said. “That perked up his interest, knowing he was that close to a school record.” Thursday, Iman and Liebl resume their rivalry at the Willmar Invitational.

Led by its distance runners, Marshall captured second in the boys division in a track quadrangular Monday with 102 points. Montevideo won the competition with 130 points

Renville County West was third with 21 points and Lincoln HI fourth with 19 points. Marshall, as usual, dominated the distance running. Iman won the 1600 and teammate Akey Jumale won the 3200 in 10:32.08 The Tigers had Bart Johnson place third, Tom Allen fourth and Francis Dierickx fifth in the mile. In the two mile, John Tauer came in second and Allen third as Marshall went 1-2-3.

“We got a lot of points in the distance,” Jacobs said. “They came through.” Matt Grabau did well in the hurdles, winning the 300-meter intermediates (42.63) and finishing second in the 110-meter highs (16.68).

“He dropped his times down pretty good,” Jacobs said. “He dropped from the out of the 17 range and out of 44-45 range. He showed a lot of improvement.”

The Tigers had handoff problems in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. They won the 800 and were second in the mile relay.

“We had a couple missed handoffs, and that cost us,” Jacobs said. “That probably cost us a chance at winning (the 1600). We have to work on that.”

Marshall went 1-2 in the 400, as Carter Kruger won the event in 55.2 and teammate Nathan Boerboom was second in 57.17. Freshman Justin Deragisch placed second in the 800.

“He hasn’t had a lot of consistent distance training,” Jacobs said. “And he popped off a 2:11. That’s a great time for him.” Marshall’s Andy Hoffman battled Lincoln’s Josh Paluch in the pole vault. Paluch won it at 9-feet, while Hoffman was third at 8-feet.

“In the first two tries, I was nervous,” Paluch said. “On the third try, the other competitor scratched, and I knew I had it.

“I’m not pleased. Usually, I get 9-6. I didn’t get that today. The wind made it harder . . . going farther in the pits, and you have to get your body up faster. I’m getting used to that with the wind we’ve had lately.” Paluch’s career-best is 9-feet-6. His goal is to reach 10 feet.

“I’m having trouble with double digits,” he said. “I’ve been going two years and can’t get above 9-6 in competition. Most of it’s mental.

“Hopefully, by the end of the year, I’ll get to 10 feet. Then I’ll focus on something higher than that as a senior next year.” Marshall’s Paul Nassif finished third in the discus with 98-feet-2.

“It would have been 105 (feet), but the wind knocked it down,” said Nassif, who ate a hotdog during the competition.

“I’ve been doing fine. I’ve improved significantly since last year. Last year, I was at 70 feet. It wasn’t very good. I’ve improved on my footwork. My form is much better. I just did standing throws last year.”

Nassif credited coach weight events coach Nadya Wiedrich for his improvement in the discus.
