REDWOOD FALLS — It was not a bad start for the Marshall High School track teams on Saturday. The boys took third place while the girls finished in fourth, but there is still work to do.

“The girls were a little anxious and apprehensive of what kind of condition they were in,” said girls head coach Leo Geraets.

“That’s pretty typical for the first meet of the year.” Alexis Miller had the best day for the girls, placing fourth in the 200 meter dash and fourth in the shot and she anchored the 800 meter relay team that finished first.

“Alexis Miller had a good day with her sprinting events,” said Geraets. “And this is the first time with the shot.” Marshall came away with fourth in the 3,200 meter relay and in the mile relay, but there were areas that the Tigers fell behind the other teams.

“We need to fill up a lot of gaps,” said Geraets. “Looking at the scoring column we have too many events where we have zeros.

“We maybe have to play with our lineup a little and see if we can pick up places here and there and be a more solid team from top to bottom,” Geraets said. Jessica Pauley was on the 3200 relay team and also placed fourth in the 800 run to help boost Marshall while Heather Martin and Amber Buysse placed in the high jump and shot put for the Tigers.

“We had some good performances,” said Geraets. “But we certainly have places to go from here.”

On the boys side the strength came from the distance events where Marshall took first in the 3200 relay and Bart Johnson was first in the mile run.

“Overall for the whole meet I think it was Bart Johnson’s day,” said boys head coach Mike Jacobs. “Bart has not been our blazing speed guy but he’s had the most zip in his legs.” The third first place finish for the Tigers came in the 800 relay, something that Jacobs was very pleased to see.

“In the last couple years we have not been that strong in the 4 by 200 relay,” said Jacobs. “If nothing else that is going to pump those guys up for the conference.” In the 800 meter run freshman Justin Deragisch came in second and Ben Haugen came in fourth, while Adam Gifford was fourth in the 200 and Carter Kruger was third in the 400.

“Carter was consistently our best,” said Jacobs. “To be under 60 the first time out is really good.

“(Deragisch) doesn’t have the miles that the other guys do and I think second place is very encouraging,” Jacobs said. In the field events Andy Hoffman placed fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump while Nate Boerboom was fifth in the long jump. Ryan Brunsvold was fifth in the shot put, but Jacobs sees room for improvement.

“He was in the low to mid 40’s last year,” said Jacobs. “I might have expected him to be above 40 but he hasn’t had many throws yet.” Overall Jacobs was pleased with the boys performance for the first meet of the season.

“It was fun to be indoors 30 miles away and it was fun to get the season rolling,” said Jacobs. “I think the kids had a good time.”
