The Projectionist's Nightmare
This is the projectionist's nightmare:
A bird finds its way into the cinema,
finds the beam, flies down it,
smashes into a screen depicting a garden,
a sunset and two people being nice to each other.
Real blood, real intestines, slither down
the likeness of a tree.
'This is no good,' screams the audience,
'This is not what we came to see.'
Not released yet:
Lord of the Rings: There and back again, again.
Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone. Odd that "philosopher" was replaced by "sorcerer"- marketing gimmick?
Star Wars Number 2: Amidala's back.
Released:
All the Monty Python series
Star Treks- the good ones (i'm told all the odd-numbered ones are better than the even-numbered ones.)
Inherit the Wind, Spencer Tracy. On the trials to put evolution into the classroom.
Woody Allens, like Manhattan.
Lost Paradise, starring Maggie Cheung and Chow Yun-Fatt. Artsy-ish indie from Hong Kong.
Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, La (1928). Directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. Old black and white.
Third Man, The (1949) Directed byCarol Reed. Arriving in Vienna, Holly Martins learns that his friend Harry Lime, who has invited him, recently died in a car accident.
Blade Runner. My brother Loves this film, but strangely enough I haven't seen it yet. He taped it down somewhere, will rummage for it soon. The 90's sequel supposedly sucks.
Notti di Cabiria, Le (1957) Nights of Cabiria. "Rich, timeless" are the comments. Sounds like weepie.
Life of Brian (1979). An irreverent John Cleese funny. About a man who was born in Bethlehem and spends his life being mistaken for Jesus.
Rashomon. In the Woods. An Akira Kurosawa classic. Though I'm not too sure abt wanting to watch it- I got bored during Seven Samurai and switched the channel repeatedly.
Rushmore (1998). "fantastic script, believable character development, and top-notch acting, and that's what counts in making a memorable film". True?
Spinning Gasing. A Malaysian indie film about a group of young people- couldn't watch it during filmfest 2001.
Yao a yao yao dao waipo qiao (1995)
Da hong deng long gao gao gua (1991).
Yi yi (2000). Missed it when it was shown in filmfest; tickets had sold out very quickly. Apparently it's a big hit overseas, wonder why it wasn't mass-marketed here.
Willow.
Good movies I've watched (i've snipped out box-office blockbusters and movie award winners):
Hotaru no haka (1988) (Tombstone for Fireflies (1994) (USA)) . Touching Jap animation about 2 siblings orphaned during World War II.
The Fifth Element Wonderful set, costumes and artwork. Whole cool-futuristic-chic. Real pity it bombed at the box office.
