Works.
My peer support leaders gave an accurate picture of the unfair prejudices associated with the choir in 1996- that it hadn't contributed significantly to the school in terms of awards, it had a reputation for being "slack" and the people in it were sissies (c.f. the situation as I understand it in ACS(I)- students find choir members way too full of themselves(?)). The batch of Sec 4s then were amazing and proved these wrong- people like Chun Leck, Ee Kia, Zi Sheng, Julian, Jiahao, Jonathan, Aik Meng, - Cheers!
They had come back from a highly successful trip to Spain in 1995 and were brimming with enthusiasm and ideas- recreating the Raffles Voices (and alumni) community for the better since that year. They have also been actively supporting the choir's public performances as often as time permits between serving their time in the army/ undergoing tertiary studies. I'm proud to say we won Gold awards in the Singapore Youth Festival Choral Competitions in 1997 and 1999, ranking 3rd in the latter. Okay, it was the finals and we were the 3rd out of 3, but at least we made it to the finals (=.
It's nice that people I didn't even know in RI recognise me as a chorister (=. I have lots of good memories from choir camps, the choir trip to Austria and Prague (see Perspectives) and crazy practice sessions. I still remember the stories by Wu Jie- to be replaced by Nelson Kwei in 1999 making salacious comments- and the big ruckus in late 1997 when there were petitions going around to reject the new choir committee the then-Sec 4s had selected.
In retrospective, that was a painful episode, but it helped us grow up. For your information, I sang as a Sop 1 till 1998, when my voice finally gave out and I was relegated to Tenor 2s (there being a lack of them). I liked my sop voice and am sad it's gone, but don't ask me to try singing falsetto. My falsetto is terrible- really terrible now. I sound like a parrot with marbles in its throat.
