The Datsuns

This is a GRRREAT band I saw live at the Schlachthof in Hamburg, Germany, on February 15th this year. They come from New Zealand (yes!) and they've been around for about 8 years now, but it's only last year (2002) that they released a self-titled LP and became hugely popular in Great Britain. Along with Interpol they were the absolute sensation of the past NME tour, and they won the award for BEST LIVE ACT. And very rightly so, I must say! :) Here are some pictures from the show along with my review of it:

First: the Casanovas.

A really nice three-piece from Australia. Well, maybe the guitar players were a bit "overdoing it" when it came to "making show", but still that was the best support act I've ever seen. Cute mod haircuts, tight tees (AC/DC and Status Quo - not the coolest choice on earth, but still - anyway on that night we had a real fashion show of band t-shirts, but more about that later...) They were loud and cocky, like your next best breakthrough band, self-conscious and confident. The songs were about picking up girls, dating and the bright lights of the city. And after about 40 minutes it was time for the Datsuns.

"Hello there, ladies and gentlemen! We're the Datsuns and we'll rock your world!" Well, they didn't exactly say that word for word, but that's what they did in the end... All the great hits in an almost unroken string of songs. The lights go out after every song, and that's when I can actually catch a glimpse of Dolf, standing right in front of me, maybe less than 50 centimetres from my hands, resting on the stage floor and clutching the camera... :) And man, his shoes, or should I say boots, on the speakers, I could actually touch them, and Christian's unzipped shoe too!

They were so close. Anyway. Let's get back to the concert...

Did I say it rocked? Yeah, sorry. :) It was such a strong, powerful show. Both visually and melodically. I already told you about the shoes, but let me get you acquainted with the rest of their wardrobe before concentrating on the music itself. Phil, who was standing on the right of the stage, had a black Casanovas t-shirt on. Christian (far left) - a Von Bondies tee (no wonder, huh? Ah, the beautiful people... *sigh*). Matt (behind the drums) - a rocking black and white the Who tee so he had his own vibe going on there. And finally the pride and beauty of New Zealand: Dolf. He did not advertise any band. Standing in the center, shaking and stamping and setting his voice into that unmistakable vibration only he's capable of producing. Dark tight pants with sewn on square-shaped pockets that showed on his tighs and a small size (although not so tight) long-sleeved dark-brown top. Cowboy shoes - beige. Anyway... the music.

No concert so far has had such impact on me. Strong and beautiful at the same time. Adventurous and melodic. Raunchy and silencing... literally silencing, like at that incredible moment when Dolf was giving us the rhythm to Freeze Sucker, even the headbangers and hell-raisers were momentarily immoblized, listening in amazement. That was really something!

And man, did they play guitar! Now that's what i call free style, that's improvization.

Dolf's voice, in a tremolo, against the guitars, was like a stark figure on a still background of a painting by a forgotten master. Like a long-lost treasure rediscovered by chance. Mute. Then sweet guitar talk, not moaning, not weeping, but speaking in rhyme. You know and I know what that means. Their locks, kicks and sweating. Just wished they'd come out one more time to meet us. well, maybe that was not possible for some reason. You have to respect their reasons. Above all respect. They give us the music...
And I have wonderful memories from this gig. I hope everyone has something like that too! Because it's not a matter of how many concerts you've been to, but WHAT concerts... as I'm writing this, I'm checking my bag to see if I hadn't lost anything. No, I have it all. The autographed ticket, the single, the address of a very nice girl who I met there. So it's cool. If you ask me...

And that's me after the concert, in a different club on the Reeperbahn!
Clearly very happy I was!
