Baza Soko這wska is actually on a street in Warsaw called Soko這wska, very
near from where I live. The action takes place in the years 1948-1950 mainly
in the 'base.'
It's a place where lorries are kept together with a repair place and
a magazine, alltogether something like a spedition firm, but in special
conditions, as everything in Poland then was state property and a characteristic
figure in the story is the party's secretary, who is actually shown in
a rather positive light.
We are brought to a 'working comrades meeting' organized in Dec. 1948, on the occasion of the unification of the two Polish workingmen's parties into a monopolistic Polish United Workingmen's Party (PZPR). We meet the drivers (one of whom is the author himself, as he really did work there for years as a driver's helper and a driver), mechanics, the bosses. We're brought to the Polish countryside with the drivers going out to help in the harvest or to transport some cargo.
They're having instant trouble with their cars, as their old and there's no exchange parts available. But it's the worst in winter. Anyway, see for yourselves, the long gone Polish harsh winters and get to know all the terriffic boys from Wola (the formerly all-workers district of Warsaw, where I am honoured to live, as it's a great place with many hidden mysteries from our latest history...)
