Her career: Marta Marrero was born 16 January 1983 in one of the lucky islands, Las Palmas. Her father is called Demetrio and her mother Ana Maria. She has two sisters Ana and Elena and one brother, Demetrio. She started to play at 7 years old and just a short time later her qualities with the racquet were evident. After she played some tournaments in the canarian islands she played in the junior national championships and she won it just with 12 years old. That same year her wins transfer spanish borders with the wins in Le Passage Agen Internatinal Championships & Gradignan Bourdeos International Championships. The next year, 1996 she got the Children´s European Champion Sub Annecy France & infantil National Championships titles. In 1997 she was runner up in the prestigious Orange Bowl-14, getting the next year this title in the sub-16. That 1998 year she won her first ITF title, winning 2 in total, 10.000$ ITF Povoa de Varzin & 10.000$ ITF Girona, getting the 1st place in the ETA (European Tennis Asociation). In 1999 she makes her debut at a WTA tournament, Villa de Madrid, as a wild card. She lost in the 1st round to Rita Grande but she almost won the second set. Two weekss later she would lose at the quarters of Roland Garros juniors, same round she reached in her 2nd WTA tournament that year, it was in the WTA SAnex Trophy of Belgium, where she reached the quarters losing to Sanchez Lorenzo. She also won at the ITF of Getxo. She ended the year in the top 200 of the WTA rankings with just 16 years old. In 2000 some physical problems prevent her to render suitably what causes that she missed a big part of the beginning of the season, but she got the ITF of Italy. But she arrived in Roland Garros and our girl reached the quarterfinals, after she defeated players like Spirlea or Van Roost. Conchita Martínez was who closed her way to the semifinals. After a semis in Belgium, the rest of the season was not good, as she lost in the 1st rounds in most of the tournaments that she played. Even so she finished the year in the 60 first players of the world. In 2001 Marta is adapting her game to the competition at the best level, facing the best players in the world and disputing the most prestigious tournaments of the world. She reached the second week of a Grand Slam again, in Australia where she lost to the future winner, Jennifer Capriati. She repeated the semis at Knnoke and she has reached her 1st final in doubles with Joannette Kruger as partner in Basel. She has stabilized her ranking in the top 60 but she is able to make much more things in tennis, hoping that the 2002 is finally the year of the explosion of her tennis and surrenders at the level of greatest. |
