Subject: Book 2, section 1 Summary Author: Marta I (198.232.250.51) Date: 07-30-1999 17:21 Aimee calls Ana in. Aimee is very nervous at the idea of Juan being in such a hurry to take her away. She wants him, but she is not willing to give up everything: her position, her wealth, for running away and sharing Juan's fate. As attractive and desirable as he is, she won't go. She starts yelling "It won't be the way he wants! It has to be my way! She had sent Ana to find Colibri to see if he would know where Juan w went riding the horse to. He went to the fields, someone told Ana. AImee wants Ana to find him and tell him tocome see her but Ana suggests that Aimee write him a note. Aimee does, but writes 'Juan de Dios' on the envelope and makes sure her name is not compromised. Ana leaves with it. Renato and Pedro Noel are talking in Don Francisco's old office and they talk about Juan. Renato has noticed when Da.Sofia saw Juan recently, she was shocked about the similarity between Juan and Don F.. Renato puts 2 and 2 together and tells PN that Juan is his brother (his dad's son). He now understands his father's request to care for Juan and love him like a brother. Renato is surprised at PN's current attitude toward Juan, since he was always Juan's best ally and supporter. There must be a strong reason but PN is not talking about it. Renato wants to speak to Juan, to get to understand him, to make it up to him for all his suffering and the things he was denied as a kid. Renato and PN stay in the office looking for the letter he saw his father hide in a bookcase hole (Bertolozi's letter about Juan). PN comments that he thinks Bertolozi first forgave Juan's mother, only to submit her to torment and torture until she died of sadness and grief. (that's his theory) Yanina has spotted Ana and sends Bautista to stop her. He does, making her fall and hit her head on a stone. Yanina quickly steals the letter from the unconscious Ana. Along come Da. Sofia and Aimee. Ana mentioned the letter, and Da. Sofia is puzzled about her statement, while Aimee is mad at her for losing it and tells Da. Sofia that Ana is delirious from the head bump. Aimee takes Ana away to shut her up. Aimee and Ana think Bautista has the letter and it's not in his best interest to give it to Renato.. Da. SOfia is in her quarters remembering other times at CR, when Don F. was there. Happy first few months of marriage, then years having to wait night after night for him, knowing full well that he was not alone. She wants to protect Renato, she wants CR to be peaceful for his sake, so she mentions to Yanina that Bautista may have to go away to France (she will give him money to live). Yanina is p____, she wants Renato for herself. 'We'll see! We'll see who winds up with him in the end!! AImee finds Colibri and learns that Juan has two horses and will be waiting for her behind the chapel at midnight for their flea. Monica! She can save me... Only she can!! Aimee runs over to Monica's room. She builds the story as if Juan wants to take her by force and she wants to stay and make Renato happy. She wants Monica to stall Juan, to tell him that A is ill but willing to go with him at another time, just not right now. Monica resists at first, but seeing how desperate Aimee is, even praying and crying, she changes her mind and goes. Renato and PN find the letter and read it. Renato understands now that it was Da. Sofia's reluctancy to the idea of Don Francisco accepting Juan as his own son publicly the force that drove that argument between her and Don F. the night of his death. Renato burns the letter, calling it an infamy, a hateful document, a call of resentment and cowardness, which is Juan's inheritance. He, Renato, will give Juan a different one, the one his father wanted Juan to have, his trust, his brotherly love and friendship, and half of the lands that belong to him by blood... Renato is at a high emotionally but... here comes Yanina with the letter from Aimee to Juan and he goes from the sky right into living hell. She swears to him that Aimee wrote the letter for JDD> SHe tells him that they see each other alone, that she loves him. Renato runs right into Aimee. He starts screaming at her calling her Hipocrita, Perdida!. She immediately puts the blame on Monica. SHE is Juan's lover. She submitted herself to him in a moment of craze, without thinking. And he turned her into his slave, his victim. Renato drags Aimee to the meeting place behind the chapel. IV Juan is arguing with Monica. He is violent. She tells him Aimee wants to rebuild her life with Renato. Juan's outraged. Wants Aimee to tell it to his face. In come REnato and Aimee. Renato is demanding that they respect his home. Juan is more than willing to settle things man to man here and now. Juan tells Renato that he came to take her away, even if he has to walk over Renato. REnato replies: 'You won't take her without marrying her...!' Juan is puzzled, so are all the others present. 'What? Marry her??' Renato finally says the name: 'Monica is like my sister. You need to respect her honor. You have to 'cumplir' (follow through on your actions). Juan is babbling in disbelief.. 'Monica??..' Aimee wants to put more wood on the fire and comes up with all kinds of accusations towards Juan's ways with Monica. she says Juan has been abusing her. She builds the whole story on the spot. 'They've been lovers, then she's been abused, submitted to the terror...' Renato keeps yelling at Juan to accept the marriage. 'Solo a mi has de darme cuentas, Juan!!' Juan responds: 'Te las dare cumplidas... Me aceptas por esposo, Monica de Molnar?' Monica at first says No, but Renato threatens that Juan will not be able to leave alive without first marrying her. Juan says it must be because I'm 'muy poca cosa' for a Molnar. He's only been a toy, a diversion, a one-night=stand, a doll to have fun with while she waits for a wedding of her ranks. That's all I'm good for. At all this he is staring at Aimee, not Monica. Monica accepts. Aimee immediately tries to complain, but Renato will see it through. THere is no reason to hide the relationship anymore, if their union is to be blessed by God. He wants Aimee and himself to be the best man and maiden of honor. Here come Cata and Da. SOfia. Renato breaks the news to them, they are puzzled. The wedding will be tomorrow. He wants them to leave right away after the wedding. REnato takes Aimee back to their quarters. He looks way different to her. COld, bitter, and untrusting, aggressive, as if he feared being stabbed in the back anytime, as if someone had injected venom into his system.. He locks Aimee up in the room. Renato has a revealing conversation with his mother, letting her know that he knows Juan and he are brothers. HE wants his mother to speak up. She does, she lets out the bitterness of her memories. Compares herself (pure, honorable) to Juan's mother (adulterer, low and vile, mother of the family's bastard son). Renato seems to still have doubts of Aimee's story. but he tells Da. SOfia that the wedding between Juan and MOnica is a warranty. That's why he wants them to marry right away. He will put guards around the house to prevent Juan from escaping without marrying Monica. That will be his proof that it was HER who was Juan's lover, the prostitute of mariners... Aimee thinks in her room that they've had gone crazy. He said yes... she said yes... Aimee calls Ana who was hiding in the room. She sends Ana out the window to find Juan and to tell him that Aimee needs to see him. Juan is still with Monica, now he is drinking heavily. Monica begs him to stop, to go away. Juan makes fun of the fact that it might be Monica who will have to give him HER last name, he will be known as Juan de Molnar. That's funny to him, sort of. He will get some documents and a house in ruins along with the last name. Juan claims that she only did it to save Renato the nightmare of knowing WHO he married. He's not above the clouds (Renato, that is)! He's a clump of mud.. a man like all others. Worse... more unfortunate and ridiculous for marrying a h____. Now the story is different. She married pure (Aimee, that is). You, Santa Monica, are the one who would run to the beach to meet me. You were JDD's lover!! He asked and you said YES!! YOU SAID YES!! Juan says he said yes because he wanted to see how far would they go. 'Renato the IMBECIL, you with your nuttyness and that b___, that hypocrite, master of all lies. She went all the way lying like that in your face. Did you both agree on this storyline in advance??' Monica denies it being a plan by Aimee and her. but Juan will not feel pity now, noone had it for him. Monica tells him that Renato cares about him, like a brother... Juan is sparked with outrage.' Like a Brother...!' now Juan is really p___. Monica keeps begging him to leave CR. She says she knows there is some compassion in his heart. You're not an animal, you are a man. Go! Juan has an internal battle between his anger and thirst for revenge and his compassion driven by Monica's tears and pleas. Juan finds Colibri. Ana meets Juan and Colibri. She tells Juan that by accident that there are guards all around and tells him Renato ordered them not to let anyone in or out of CR. She says she thinks it's to prevent his escape. She tells Juan Aimee wants him to meet her at the window, that Aimee is crying scared for him. She tells him that Aimee said that if he doesn't go meet her, she will kill herself. Juan tells Colibri that they're leaving now. but Ana insists that the guards are armed and have orders to shoot and that everyone at the house knows about it. Everyone??! Then it's a TRAP for Me!!! Now he thinks Monica is deep in this and that her tears and pleas were intentional to drive him right to his own death. Juan tells Ana he will go see Aimee. Aimee also asks him to leave, without mentioning the guards. Now he KNOWS they both are in this together, they planned it all along... He will stay!! He was dumb enough to fall in love with Aimee and to believe in Monica's tears. But now he knows what they're up to. He tells Aimee that Ana pretold him about the guards. He is going for revenge, their own way, with enganos. Sinking the knife slowly. He will marry Monica. Vengeance is all Juan can think about now. And his worse hate is not for AImee, but for Monica, the fragile lady who had him at her feet for just an instant, appealing to his compassion and pity and almost winning the battle with is anger. Now he can only think about having her at the Luzbel, totally at his mercy, like another treasure for the pirate. Juan is declaring war on everyone and everything. Aimee jumps out the window and meets Monica. She tells her about Juan's intentions. Monica is in disbelief. In comes Renato. Aimee questions him about his drive to marry Juan and Monica, even against their own will. Renato turns to Monica, kind of looking for confirmation. If you were REALLY HIS, a woman of your level cannot deny that offering. You must have loved him to do what you did. If you are reluctant because of his wealty or social status, that will change immediately after the wedding, I assure you. I NEED TO KNOW you love Juan, that you WERE HIS. Aimee keeps complaining, claiming Monica does not want to go through with it. But Monica tells Renato she will marry Juan. She will go wherever he will take her. That's her final word. Renato asks Aimee how did she get out of the room. SHe says out the window and then complains that he locked her up, she had to do something. She's not going to tolerate him treating her this way. REnato says that she will have to tolerate that and much more. Monica at least is confronting her actions with dignity. Monica confirms again that she will face to the consequences of her actions. (talk about thrill and intensity or what??!!!)
