Reflections on Psalm 22

In this Psalm of lament, David calls out to God in human anguish and pain. He continues on to write of the reassurance of God's history of faithfulness and the need to trust in his goodness and care.

The Aramaic words "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" are recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, (Matthew 27:46) and Mark, (Mark 15:34) as the words cried out by Jesus at the crucifixion. Christians look to this Psalm to witness the human side of Christ, and his understanding of and compassion for the pain and suffering of this world.
