Reflections on Psalm 23

The twenty-third Psalm is certainly the best-known Psalm, and possibly the best-known chapter in the Bible. It is read and recited by Jews and Christians alike, and its words of comfort in times of sorrow and death are provided as a reassurance of God's care, even beyond this life.

Christians view the image of the Good Shepherd in this Psalm as Jesus, who referred to himself as such in the Gospel of John. "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep." John 10: 14-15
