Dear Prospective Employee:

The following information is part of your first trial assignment. It is up to you to take the information already collected from Investigative Services to resolve the problem indicated by the client scenario given below. Please remember that all information received or deduced should be kept strictly confidential.

Client Profile
 Client Name:  Mr. Scott Mackenzie
Profession:  Floor Supervisor at the EDY’S® Grand Ice Cream Factory
Location:  5929 College Avenue, Oakland, CA  94618
Length of Employment:  1 year, 5 months
Family:  Wife, 2 children, 1 dog
 Education:  Bachelor’s Degree—Food Preparation, University of Wisconsin—Madison
         Master’s Degree—Business Management, Duke University
Physical Description:  Age- 37; Ht- 5’11”, Wt- 210 lbs.
Hobbies and Activities:  Golf, Avid Sports Fan

The client suffers from severe abdominal pain, cramping, and bloating. Frequent flatulence associated with the abdominal pains has become a problem for him at work. Mr. Mackenzie first noticed the pains during his undergraduate research at the University of Wisconsin. They were slight and eventually went away. The symptoms came back years later and have been very strong for the past 16 months. The client has been taking Gas-X? every two days to relieve his discomfort, but the symptoms continue. He is considering filing a lawsuit against the makers of Gas-X? for their long-term inability to relieve his distress. Mr. Mackenzie is not sure if the lawsuit is advisable because he has been reading about an increase of heartburn in his age/weight group.

Your assignment: Determine if a lawsuit against the makers of Gas-X? is wise. Research the system involved and decide if there are other possibilities for the client’s discomfort that can be corrected in less costly ways. The client has been quite cooperative and may give samples of body fluids, but only if absolutely necessary. Make your recommendation once you have finished your work.

Sincerely,

Clint Tucker
