Question:What is the effect of ___________________________________________________ on the ______________________________________________________ of _______________.
Independent Variable (what you change): __________________________________________
Are all other variables controlled? _____If not, explain. _______________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________
Dependent Variable (what is being changed because of the independent variable): __________ ______________________________________________________________________________
How will you quantitatively measure this (instrument, units, how often…be VERY specific)? __ ______________________________________________________________________________
You must have at least 50 data points (ex- 25 control group and 25 experimental group).
What is your control group, and how many specimens/trials will you have? ________________ _____________________________________________________________________________
What is your experimental group, and how many specimens/trials will you have? ____________ _____________________________________________________________________________
**Plant projects require 100 plants and you must measure 5 things: height, color, number of leaves, mass before and after, stem diameter, etc. These are very difficult to successfully complete, and are therefore not encouraged unless you are an experienced horticulturist.
**Human projects require 100 people. Participants must sign Human Subjects Form (parent signatures are required for those under the age of 18). Be warned that it is difficult to get signed forms back from 100 participants. It is also difficult to get 100 people to take the time to complete your study, since it usually must take place outside of class.
**Projects involving microorganisms are only allowed if you have a mentor in a university, institution, or hospital willing to oversee your work. Microbe work cannot be done at home!
**If you work with a partner, your completed paper must be longer than if you worked alone (see website for details: http://www.peachtreeridge.org/academics/coreclasses/sciencefiles/science_research_project.pdf
**Check the website (www.uga.edu/oasp) for ideas and additional rules.
Briefly describe what you plan to do. Please write legibly.

Remember, you will have to write a research paper around your experiment.List 3 credible sources (NOT FROM ENCYCLOPEDIAS/WIKIPEDIA) where you might find information on your topic. These should be in MLA format (see website: http://www.peachtreeridge.org/resources/writingservices/index.html)
1. ____________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________
Finding Your PASSION:
1. What was your science research project last year?
a. Was the project interesting enough to continue? Explain.
2. List 5 things in which you are interested.
3.
Go to www.uga.edu/oasp website,
click on science fair then project ideas/resources.
a.
Scroll down to Advanced Projects (yellow), peruse categories and past project
titles, list 2 projects of interest in 2 different categories.
4.
Go to 5.
Access Galileo as directed by the media specialist from school or from
home (enter
Home/Password
Access which is _______________ ) and hit Go. Now select academic
search
premier (EBSCO).
a.
In the Find box, enter a topic that you would consider investigating for
your science research project. Note how many articles your search produced.
Consider narrowing your search by focusing on the scientific nature of
your topic, for example, “science of ___.”
b.
Select one article produced by your search (give title, science journal,
issue, date) and suggest how to turn it into a science research project.
c. Find a key word in the article and use it to search for a 2nd article that relates to your science research project (give title, science journal, issue, date, and how it relates).
