Pre-1910 Bartender's Manuals and Other Books Containing Cocktail Recipes: A Bibliography

Return to main page.

This bibliography is an updating of the one that appeared in M,SU, 115-17.  If you are reading it on the Web, additions are highlighted in red; if you are reading a print out, look for a superscript "n" after the year.

I am deeply grateful to Brian Rea for his help in this first updating (Aug. 1999).  There are sixteen additions. I am also grateful to Fernando Castellon for four additions also in red. For these, a "c" appears after the superscript "n."

To repeat a few words from the book just cited: the earliest reference to the Martini occurs in a bartender's manual of 1884; the earliest reference in literature is in a short story in 1896.  For a decade or so of its history, then, the Martini is known only from bartender's manuals.

An asterisk marks books that have disappeared and have not been seen by any living person known to me.  An asterisk also marks a few books that someone else has seen and told me about; I have so indicated.  (I corresponded in 1981 with the J. F. Hansman to whom I refer.  He was working on a history of the cocktail.  I have been unsuccessful in my attempt to reestablish contact with him.)

Cookbooks and books of household management that contain drink recipes are another useful source for the early history of the Martini.  A couple of them are cited below.  My bibliography is likely to be quite incomplete in this respect.

The arrangement is by date.  All authors and titles that were included in this bibliography as it appeared in M,SU were also listed in the Index of that book.
