THE COLLEGE COURT CUP FINAL 2002

19 Carysfort Avenue  14 - 19 The Badgers (17 Castlebrook)

Kick off:
10:15 a.m. 29th April 2002

The publication of this match report is somewhat late but has to be done all the same. Unfortunately the team photos that were taken at this historic encounter were lost when someone left the camera in the back of a taxi. Anyway, over-confidence is a terrible thing. The confidence displayed by David Lillis on the eve  of this historic encounter probably proved to be both his and his teams downfall in the end as an assured display of attacking brilliance by the supposed underdogs of 17 Castlebrook proved to be the difference between the two teams. They also proved that a "shoot on sight" policy is better than niftiness! For The Badgers, Sean O'Donnell started after some speculation that he may be used as an impact substitution. However, the late withdrawal of Simon Everard, who had to go back to bed following a tough 9 o'clock lecture, put paid to this thought. Mr. Eve is now internationally recognized as an unbelieveably lazy f*cker.

Anyway, The Badgers had a flying start with Ronan Hourihane opening the scoring early doors. This was soon followed by a couple of efforts from Rob Desmond, and Ollie with a left foot strike. Indeed, The Badgers raced into a 7-0 lead before 19 Carysfort got their arses into gear, a couple of quickfire goals from John Garry and Lillis opening their account. However, The Badgers replied in superb style and despite a great effort by 19 Carysfort to close the gap further, it remained at 7 goals at the break, The Badgers leading 12-5. 19 Carysfort grabbed 2 quickfire goals at the start of the second half, to narrow the gap further, but a goal from Darragh Oliver brought a halt to this, as well as some heroic defending from Sean O'Donnell. A couple of goals from Lillis and Calvey was followed by goals from Desmond, Gormally and Hourihane. John Fallon, who had been having a solid enough game took a few whacks on the ankle late on and struggled for a bit. In the end, The Badgers had a comfortable victory by 19 - 14.

Please note, the second leg of this final was declared null and void due to 19 Carysfort being unable to field a team and having to borrow players from The Badgers side, so this score stands.
