U.S. Highway 385 in Eastern Colorado
Conclusion:
Overall, I’m glad I made the trip. A long-distance bike trip is something that many people dream about but that few people do. Although it wasn’t perfect, I had a great time, learned a lot about traveling and about myself, and saw America in the best possible way: From the seat of a motorcycle, outside all the way. I learned things I never would have about motorcycle touring, things I decided to try and pass on with this narrative.
The next long trip I’d like to take would be some kind of “theme trip.” For example, I may try to follow old Route 66 (although a lot of people do that) or perhaps a more obscure route like Route 95 that runs from the Canadian Border to Mexico, most of it not along interstates, through some of the most scenic country of the West. Or perhaps a run up Highway 101, the Pacific Coast Highway. My goal will be to have the route traverse visually and historically interesting terrain, and for it not to be along an interstate!
To anyone contemplating a similar trip, I’d say: Do it! It’s something you will remember your whole life. If you take the experiences of others, a big dose of common sense, and sufficient mindset, you will have the time of your life. Just remember that it’s a lot more like an athletic endurance event than it is like a normal automobile vacation. As long as you maintain a positive outlook and have a sufficient plan, you should have as much fun as I did
