Elephant Song

Not so long ago throughout this land,
Elephants roamed without fear of mans hand.
Now only in a few places sanctuary they seek,
For these huge animals are gentle and meek.

In times past and still to this day,
Their ivory is poached in many a way.
They are hunted down wherever they are,
By people on foot or even a car.

They are poisoned or shot with a gun,
Not given a chance to hide or to run.
We hunt them down without a care,
The way it is done is that fair.

The mothers are killed the calves they die,
You hear the others sounding a sigh.
Why do we do it the ivory is not needed.
Extinct they will be if the call is not heeded.

The call to the world is to take care,
If we want our children to share.
In the joy to be found in sight and touch,
Of the Elephants who love us so much.

A time to educate a time to show,
If we want their population to grow.
A time to change or it will not be long,
Before we never hear the Elephant song.

For Harry, Sally and Duma at the
Knysna Elephant Park, South Africa
