The Telephone

Where would we be without someone near,
What would we do without someone to lend an ear.
How do we get some one to listen when we want to moan,
It's all very simple now we pick up the telephone.

Many years ago before Alexander Graham Bell,
Some people used smoke signals some would just yell.
Next they carved letters made of stone,
All very nice but hard to carry alone.

Then someone invented a thing called paper,
They used it to tell, better than stone much lighter,
Now we had light letters carried by pony express,
Along came the post office golly, what a mess.

We have much to thank our old Alex for,
The phone is quick just a flash you speak to next door.
Whether the message is sad or one of joy,
Listen mum and dad my wife had a boy.

You can speak to everyone all around the earth,
Even in Australia you can tell them of the birth.
Alex we thank you for your telephone,
Now these days no-one even leaves their home.
