Trying

I can't love you the way you want me to,
A friend for ever no matter what you do.
Your love for me so hard to push aside,
A love so strong a feeling you must hide.

My love I gave to another many years ago,
No matter how I say it you don't want to know.
My heart will break at the thought of your pain,
Will all your suffering bring you any gain.

How did it all start I do not have a clue,
One day you told me "I love you".
What did I do I am not sure,
But for your love I must find a cure.

The more I try and explain to you,
You say "love me back, I know you do".
I love you as a friend not as a lover,
I told you before my heart is with another.

The time has come for us to part,
I know I'm going to break your heart.
What other choice is there for me,
If I want to keep my sanity.

Six months have past since we parted,
The time to return leaves me faint hearted.
Your love for me is it still so strong,
Or I hope that you will prove me wrong.

As we meet again I see your eyes alight,
I prepare myself for another big fight.
As we stand there face to face,
Which of us is going to win this race.

Will it be me with my love for another,
Or your desire to be my childs' mother.
You smile at me and say "how are you",
I say "Great but what are we to do".

Can we live our lives as friends,
So many things on which this depends.
My heart belongs to another,
But I need you as a lover.

The years of love do I throw them aside,
And show our love that we did hide.
Or do I end my days with my wife,
And give up the chance of another life.

Who will help me and end my sorrow,
For I know not what to do tomorrow.
To leave my wife and start again,
Or to be with you and end your pain.

It all started as such simple fun,
But I don't know which way to run,
The time has come to speak my mind,
The things I say may not be kind.

To my wife I have loved you for years,
Please don't hate me through your tears.
It will be difficult for us to part,
But the fire has left my heart.

To my lover you have gained my love,
At last set free like a soaring dove.
My life is whole my soul complete,
No longer do you have to compete.

Our love is revealed for all to see,
No longer shall we hide you and me.
At last we spend our time together,
Another life to last for ever.
