Our "Virtual" Flat Stanley
Project
Have you ever read the book
Flat
Stanley by Jeff Brown? It's a
story about a boy named Stanley who had a dreadful accident
- a school bulletin board fell on him! Stanley becomes
flatter than a pancake and finds out that in some ways it's
an advantage to be flat and in other ways it's a
disadvantage to be flat.
Our friends in Mrs. Morton's third
grade class at Murphy Ranch School in Whittier, California
read Flat
Stanley earlier in the school
year then they created flat versions of themselves using
paper, pencils, markers, and crayons to send around the
world to visit many schools.
Flat
Alex, created by Alex at
Murphy Ranch School, arrived in Whitefish Bay a few weeks
ago. However, he did not arrive from the Post Office folded
up in an envelope, he came as an email attachment - so we
printed him, laminated him, and attached him to a dowel so
he could stand.
After we read
Flat
Stanley, we brainstormed ways
that our visitor
Flat
Alex could have adventures
right here at Richards School. Next we worked in nine groups
of 2 or 3 students each to write about the problems
Flat
Alex would have in second
grade because he is flat and how he could solve those
problems. After writing first draftz, we proofread and
edited our stories, then wrote final draftz which we checked
over again with our teacher.
We learned how to use a digital camera
so we could illustrate our stories in a new and interesting
way. We took digital photos of
Flat
Alex having the adventures and
misadventures that we had written in our stories. Our
teacher combined our story text and our photos into nine
chapters then posted our story on our web page.
We hope you enjoy reading
the story
of Flat
Alex created by 2K!
