Other Hand Productions does not have any internship positions available at this time. We do offer private lessons year-round in manipulation, construction and design.
Our internship is an opportunity for anyone interested in gaining experience in puppet theater and design. Only one intern is accepted per session. Although every slot offers its own show specific opportunities, every intern will experience the following.
Examples of projects we work on include building rod puppets for "Singing Our Way Home: Legends from the Australian Dreamtime" for Tears of Joy Theater. Creating rod marionettes for "The Decameron" for Other Hand Productions. Marionettes for "Alice in Wonderland" for Northwest Children's Theater.
Other Hand Productions is a independent puppet theater based in Portland, OR. In addition to performing across the United States, the founders are also heavily involved in the theater and puppet community in Portland. Co-director Mary Robinette Kowal is an award-winning designer and directly oversees the internship program. Her partner, Jodi Eichelberger, is a critically acclaimed director, puppeteer and writer and helps to guide the interns in the creation of scripts for their independent project.
In order to provide the sense of what it is like to function in the professional world, these internships require a time commitment equivalent to a full-time job. In addition to training the intern will also receive housing in a classic 1907 home ten minutes from downtown Portland. (People with allergies should be aware that the home has two extremely friendly cats.)
