How to help our children hear better in services.
By Mary Lois Bierman

How many times in life have you been around a radio being played when you worked or other places? After a while a song seem to be running through your mind until you wanted to scream for it to stop!

With our son we gave him some toys to play quietly with on the Sabbath. Like the song that we heard while doing other things, and really were not paying attention to that we subconsciously picked, those little ones will pick up what is being said during services while coloring, playing with their quietly with trucks, dolls, or some little thing to keep them from being bored and tuned out. Years later our son would tell us things that was in the Bible. We asked him where or who told him those things. You and dad talked about it he would tell me. At the age of 7 he asked to be baptized. No one had made him learn verses, or ever talked to him about baptism. He could tell you things that took us years to learn because as he played quietly he was hearing. Even today at the age of 23 he has a dedication to our Father and His Son.

We talked at home, living our faith before him was our teaching him. He heard us while he played at our feet. We taught him how to live and make good choices, be truthful, and the basic things that are right and wrong, and why. He didn't see us say one thing and do something else.

Children endure services that are delightful and very meaningful to adults. They are not called yet, and we can not expect them to care about what is being said. If made to sit still, and pay attention they tune it out, get bored, or go to sleep, and most of all wish it was over.

I can remember when I was little and we went to Church I was so bored. I got more pinches from mom because I wiggled and just could not sit still. While she was wrapped up in what the preacher was being said I was not getting a thing out of services.

Lets help the children learn by how we let them learn in ways that would be pleasant. They are children, and while play time on the Sabbath should not be running races, or playing ball, but more relaxed quieter things, remember they are still children and they learn though playing, and that is part of their life. Use it to enhance their hearing what the pastor is saying rather being bored, and tuned out.
