Ref: Kajir collars

Karian, Notes Section 04H

Gor has available to the Master or Mistress, numerous sorts and styles of collars, based mostly on culture within Gor, and the Owner's preference for the kajir. A collar can be anything from a simple coarse, cheap rope about the neck, to the most elaborate jewel-encrusted golden neck-ornament. In the collar, intent is everything.

In Gor, the most common kajir brand is the Kef. For kajirae, it is done with cursive script, a flowing brand. For kajiri, it is done with a more massive, block print. Therefore, and to greatly ease confusion because anyone observing the kajir can readily ascertain it's sex, in ircGor the kajir's collar is shown as {OWNER} for kajirae, and [OWNER] for kajiri.

Book 1, page 187
The primary significance of the collar is that it identifies the master and his city.
There are seven common purposes to the wearing of a collar, and they are as follows;
1) Visibly designates a girl as slave
2) Impresses a girl's slavery upon her, makes her more aware of her slavery
3) Identifies her Master
4) Makes it easier to leash her
5) Makes it easier to put her in various ties/restraints
6) Because it is beautiful
7) Because it pleases the Master to do so

The Gorean word for collar, is ko-lar. It is pronounced the same as "collar", and in the books, "collar" is used almost exclusively.

Book 6, page 294
Most collars are a flat, circular band, hinged, which fits and locks snugly about a girl's neck. Very simple, yet very effective. The Gorean collar, if it has a lock, commonly uses the 'kajir lock', a 6-pin locking mechanism, one pin for each letter of the word "kajira". (The Book actually references 7 pins for 7 letters in the word "kajira", but since "kajira" has but 6 letters, it is most likely a typographical error.)

Book 25, page 358
When changing a kajir's collar, always place the second collar on first, then remove the old one, so that not for an instant will the kajir be without a collar. This is standard Gorean protocol, and the same principle applies to any form of restraint set upon the kajir.

Different regions on Gor are famous for the type or style of collar that they place upon kajir. For instance, the Turian collar fits more loosely and resembles a hinged ring, looped about the throat, loose enough that a man can easily get his fingers beneath it and around it, using it to pull a girl along or to him.

Port Kar uses a Turian style collar of black steel, slim and obdurate, or a regular Northern band collar of the same black steel, but padded with leather. It is common for a specific style or motif to prevail in a given city.

The Bazi-style collar is wide, tapered towards the top, belled out at the bottom, and commonly inscribed and/or enameled with intricate designs and motifs which signify the Owner and/or the nature of the kajir.

Some steadings in Torvaldsland use torqs instead of collars, for high kajiri.

Collars can be of any metal, set with coloured glass or jewels, inscribed or not, enameled in any colour or combination of colours, solidly or in patterns or pictures.

The collar can also be of leather, sewn about a girl's neck. A collar may also be sheathed in silk, or leather. A collar might be made of chain, sheathed or not. Even a simple, cheap, heavy and coarse rope loosely knoted, even a single slender thread can signify a collar...

Book 25, page 256
Instead of a collar, the option is available for the use of wrist or ankle cuffs, bracelets, or just a ring. This is a common practice in the city of Ar, where perhaps it is not always in the Owner's best interest to flaunt the nature, or quantity, or quality, of his slaves. Then too, some simply prefer it.

Book 11, page 277
Tags in the ears are also sometimes used, the name of the Owner engraved on the back, sometimes ornamental, and slung on a thin stiff wire piercing the ear. Tagging is very quick and very inexpensive, and so is usually used by raiders so that they can easily identify thier captures at a common collection point, later.

Choose the collar for your kajir with great care, it's nature will reflect upon the slave with it's aspect, and meanings.
