Dr. Richard Hornberger

The Dr. Hornberger grew up in Hightstown, N.J., which is where he spent elementary school and High school at. His family had their roots rooted in Maine, which is probably why he spent his summers there and later moved there. He attended Bowdoin College and Cornell Medical School to study medicine, and at the early age of 26 years old he was drafted and did his military duty as a doctor at the 8055th M.A.S.H, which is one of the 5 field hospital units in the Korean war.

Hornberger's Start

After his service as a doctor was up, he returned to Waterville, Maine, where he established his doctor's office. Of course in the beginning there weren't many patients, and with all this free time he came up with the idea of the book about his experiences in M*A*S*H. About 8 years later he was finished and he presented the book to many publishing companies but was rejected more than a dozen times. He then tried publishing the book under the name Richard Hooker; the name refering to his golf swing.

The Book Became A Movie

The book was a success, and the people loved it so much someone decided to buy the rights from Dr. Hornberger for $100,000 and make a movie out of it. The movie was also a success along with the television series, and as the program grew, so did the Doctors wallet. All together he gained $250,000 just from the M*A*S*H television series. It was far from accurate though, the movie that is, and it made the military doctors look not military with the jokes and pranks that the show was full of.
