The former palace of the Warmia Bishops raised upon the cathedral hill in the southeastern corner of the defensive walls of the city. Its construction was probably started in the 14th centruy. Several times burned and reconstructed, the castle got a new Baroque shape in the years 1727-1728 due to bishop Krzystof Szembek. Almost totally destroyed during the Second World War. Rebuilt in the years 1967-1969, it was designated to become a Nicolaus Copernicus Museum; the famous astronomer lived and worked in this town for many years. Here Nicolaus Copernicus (Miloŀaj Kopernik) wrote his life-piece "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium." The exhibits illustrate the life and scientific work of the great astronomer. |
