Gołuchów

Originally a fortified manor founded by Rafał Leszczyński in 1560, the building was extended by Wacław Leszczyński in the early 17th century. He added a new wing with an arcaded gallery. The castle fell into a decline in the early 19th century and got into the hands of the Działyński family in 1853. In 1870 Izabella Działyńska nee Czartoryska undertook a complete remodeling of the castle in order to create a historical seat of the Leszczyński family; she wanted it to become a castle-museum and memorial of the family's past glory. Her ideas born from the 19th century historicism resulted in the creation of quite a new building which, totally reshaped, received a French Renaissance appearance. The interiors were decorated with rich art collections, including a rare set of ancient vases and enamel ware from Limoges. The construction works consulted by the famous French architect Viollet-le-Duc were carried out by Maurycy Ouradou and Józef Kajetan Jankowski. A palace for Izabella Działyńska was raised in the vicinity of the castle-museum. The Nazis looted the palace during World War II. The museum opened again in the 1960's. Visitors are also attracted by a vast and captivating landscape park.
