A superb residence built near the river San for the Kraśicki family about 1580. It received its final shape furing the reconstruction works carried out in the years 1597-1618, ordered by one of the most powerful magnates in the Polish eastern provinces, Marćin Kraśicki. Rectangular in plan, this royal-like residence has cylindrical towers on all corners and an extra one marking the entrance passage leading into the yard. The tower which contains a chapel is called God's Tower, another one - Pop's Tower, and the other two - King's and Nobelman's Towers. Both towers as well as walls were topped with attics which are condisered to the most beautiful ones in Poland. Deterioration came in the 18th century. In the 19th century the castle got into the hands of the Sapieha family. Important restoration works were undertaken during the inter-war period according to Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz's design. Destroyed again during World War II, the residence was partly reconstructed after the war. |
