Ksiaż

One of the biggest castles in Poland situated on a steep rocky hill. Originally a Gothic fortified stronghold of Prince Bolko I erected about 1292. It got into the hands of the Hochberg Family in the early 16th century; several times remodeled. In the years 1718-1734, on the initiative of Konrad Maksymilian Hochberg, the castle was converted into a Baroque residence according to Feliks Hammerschmidt's design. It was then that a new eastern wing was added with a splendid Maksymilian's hall on the first floor where musical recitals are organized. At the end of the 18th century a picturesque ruin called "The Old Castle" was erected on the neighboring hill. The subsequent reshaping took place in 1904-1923 according to von Molheim's design in the spirit of modernized the German Renaissance style. The western wing was added and the castle grounds were put in order. Important earthworks were undertaken during the time of World War II because the castle was planned to shelter Hitler's headquarters. The renovated building of the castle houses a museum and a hotel; a number of the castle outbuildings are used by the local stud-farm which organizes horse-races and auction sales of horses.
