I was driving home from work one evening at twilight along a road with a lot of
construction hazards. They were widening the highway and subsequently modifying a
few access roads as well. I turned onto one of these roads and was changing a
tape in the cassette player when I looked up and was startled to see a man in an
orange vest and hard hat holding a stop sign in the middle of the road. I swerved
sharply to avoid him and pulled over to the side of the road, scared half out of my
wits. I turned around to apologize, and he was gone. The road was completely
deserted save a large concrete barrier in front of the lane I was headed into.
Had I continued straight, I surely would have crashed and died, since I wasn't
wearing a seatbelt. I said a quick thank you and continued home, eyes glued to
the road!
