I lived in Huntsville Alabama for a few years. We lived in a valley which had Hills and mountains on either side. During the summer months I use to go hiking up in the hills that where about a half mile from my house. This one trail I use to follow all the time would wind through the hills and into the mountains. The trees were thick. I was always told to be careful because their were still bootleggers in the hills making their moonshine. Also Caves peppered the mountains around here.
One afternoon I was on a hike and deep in the woods in the mountains you could hear the wind blowing and the birds singing it was real relaxing. This one day I got about half way down the trail when all the sound just stopped? I thought it was rather weird that I did not hear any birds singing or the wind blowing it was as though some one just turned all the sound off. I kept on moving forward I could hear my footsteps as I stepped on the leaves but could not hear any other noise. I left the trail and headed up a secondary trail to the left that went up the mountain. It was hot about 90 or so and Humid as hell. I stopped to rest and drink some water. As I was resting sitting on a rock I noticed off at a distance about 100 yards or so their seem to be an old shack. I walked over to it to look around. Sill their was no birds or any other sound.
As I approached the shack I could see it use to be a Moonshine operation. The old wooden barrels were still their all over the place. I leaned up agents an old tree to rest a bit when I felt a cool breeze blow across my face. It felt good in that heat but I noticed that none of the leaves on the trees were moving. Did not think much more about it. I then moved towards the shack and went inside it was a mess trash every were. Found an old lantern I kept that and walked back out side. I then felt another cool breeze rush across my face it felt like it was blowing towards the East. I started to walk in that direction not because of the breeze but because I could see a bunch of bushes along the mountain and thought it could be blackberries. Which would have been a treat right about then. As I got closer I could see that in fact they were blackberries and started to pick them and fill myself up with them. When I noticed along the rock their looked like a hole or a dark area. I walked over and could see it was a cave that was covered with a lot of rocks.
Normally I don't go into caves unless I have another person with me and a lot of string. But I figured I would take a peek and not go real deep in. I moved some of the rock out of the way to make a hole large enough for me to fit through. I climbed in and switched on my mag light. And started to look around the entrance was rather small I had to get on my hands and knees to move forward. I must have crawled about 20 feet when the entrance opened up into a Large Room. It had to be a good 60 or 90 feet across and about 50 feet high. As I walked around I could tell some one had been in their a long time ago. Old wood crates were broken along the north wall. I was thinking at that time that the Bootleggers used it to store their goods. And I was right I found some old bottles mixed in with the wood nothing in them but they were old. As I started to move around more I found another tunnel that was a bit smaller I started to walk down that and that is when I found the two Skeletons tucked up in a small passage way on the right. I froze in my steppes. After I pulled my self together I could tell they have been their a LONG time. The clothes did not even come close to matching what was worn at that time. To the left of one I found a pistol that was still loaded. I figured this was not right. I backed out of the passageway and headed back out of the cave when I could hear a very Low Rumble sound hard to describe kind of like a sound you could feel more than hear if you know what I mean. I got the heck out of dodge at that point.
When I stepped out side of the cave the first thing I noticed was the wind blowing and the birds Singing talk about rattling my nerves. I headed back down the mountain and went right to the local sheriffs office and reported what I found and drew them a map of where the cave was and where I found the Skeletons. That Evening at home I got a call from the sheriffs office. It was the deputy I was talking too that afternoon. He thanked me for letting them know where every thing was at. He told me I found the bodies of to Federal Agents that came up missing back in the 20s. He said they were busting moonshine's and seems they met their match when they came up on that operation.
I felt kind of sad but then I started to think and I just wonder if they led me to their bodies? The sound going away. The Cold Breeze's I felt. I have not been back in those hills sense.
