some people think Berkeley is Mahir's baby

day one

The first contractions began at 12:30 am on 7 December 1999. Kim tried to sleep as much as possible in between, but they were coming within 5 minutes of each other starting at 3:00 am.

We saw the Ob/Gyn first thing in the morning. One centimeter — not much. We then went to an ultrasound to get an idea of the size of the baby and whether it was in distress. Baby was estimated at 8 to 8½ pounds.

This is Kim wandering around the house waiting for the appropriate time to leave for the hospital.

We arrived at the hospital at 6:00 pm. Kim was almost immediately put on a pitocin drip (to increase the strength and number of contractions). Kim was getting pretty miserable and despite the pitocin, she had only dilated to 2 centimeters. She was then given an epidural block. This pretty much cuts off all feeling in her midsection. She liked that. Waiting until about 11:30 pm, she had only gone to 3 centimeters. The decision to have a Caesarian section was made.

This is Kim on the best prenatal drugs money can buy.

The Caesarian went well. Getting the baby out only takes about ten minutes. Most of the operation is putting Kim back together. Kim was a little disappointed that she could not see the operation from her vantage point.

Berkeley cried a little. He was good sized: 8 lbs. 6 oz. and 18½ inches long.

Here is one of his first pictures (with Dad in the delivery room).

Here's a better look.

And one more.

Talking with Mom.

A relaxing moment.
