Our whirlwind tour of (mostly) the Bodensee region.
The first stop after landing in Frankfurt was Würzburg. This is a small city on the Main river. This picture is from a pedestrian bridge. It features saints on either side.
The next day we visited Schloss (Castle) Neuschwanstein. This was one of the castles build by "Mad" King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He was declared mad so that the citizenry could force him to stop spending Bavarian marcs on his castles. He lived in this one only 172 days before was was exiled and found drown.
In remembrance of Ludwig II, Berke & I tried on some German hats while we waited for the ride up the hill to the castle.
This is a view of Schloss Neuschwanstein from a bridge over the nearby Pöllat River gorge. If this castle looks familiar, it may be because Cinderella's castle in Disneyland is based on this one.
Berke taking a squatting break at our home base on the Island of Lindau, on the German side of the Bodensee. With all the air and car time, we tried to let him run loose as much as possible.
This is a view of the port of Lindau. The Swiss and Austrian Alps are in the background.
Oh yeah, and Berke is screaming his head off in the foreground.
A close-up of the Alps and a lion protecting the harbor.
When Europeans (or Asians) come to the US they marvel at our large cars. When we go there, we can't get enough of their cute little cars. We think this woman was a little annoyed when Kim took her picture but we had to put it up since it came out this clear at 140 km/hr.
When in Switzerland, do as the Swiss. We bought chocolate and ate fondue for lunch. Berke enjoyed his plate of fries, which sometimes got dipped in the melted gruyere.
The weather was beautiful in Zurich. It would have been nice to have been able to spend more time there. Probably expensive, but nice.
On our last night we sought and found Frankfurt's most popular brewpub (according to the guide book), Wäldches. There were no tables available and one waitress told us to leave. We did find ample room at a table near the bar, sitting with our new friend Karlo and his second wife (whose name was not dropped).
Berke was treated to a toy truck and several packets of Gummy Bears by our new friend. I was treated to a typical German shot which consisted of a small apple soaking in a brandy snifter full of booze. You take a few bites of the apple and then drink the shot. If anyone knows what I drank could you let me know. The next thing I remember I'm on the flight back home.
