Convolution is a collection of original songs and instrumental tracks composed and recorded during the past twelve months in my home studio. The style of music is Rock with a hint of Dance in places. Orchestral and world music play an important part in defining the sound. The structure and organisation of the songs owes much to the epic concept albums of progressive rock bands. Although this album is not a concept album, it does explore many different musical avenues. This is how the album got its title.

The Tracks

Welcome To Your World

This song is a celebration of new life. Bright, jangling guitar patterns and powerful synths contrast with a slow instrumental section in the middle. It all fires up again for an energetic reprise with the brass section joining in before settling down with some child-like reminiscences of the opening strains.

Safety In Numbers

Synth Pop with a hard edge.

Kashmir Revisited

Driving guitar rhythms and gated drums give way to a rich string orchestra. This instrumental track takes its name from a Led Zeppelin track with which it shares a certain ambience. The writing for string orchestra was inspired by the Polish composer Gorecki and the idea of combining the sound with a rock band by The Verve.

Convolution

The title track of the album. This unique dance epic in 3/4 time explores many different musical avenues. The sound was inspired by The Chemical Brothers but the structure and organisation of the track is very much in line with the progressive rock style that underpins the album.

Young Executives

This song was originally written back in the 1980's when I was unemployed. Thatcher was prime minister and the mood was enterprise. When I first wrote the song I was very envious of people getting rich quick while others were loosing their jobs. Years later, when I come to finish the song, I realise that enterprise is not such a bad thing but I feel sorry for the people who only have their work. They have to put in very long hours and they lose their families which is just as tragic.

Mountain Man

Fast instrumental track with a Beatles riff transformed into dark heavy metal. Bells and gongs take up the riff creating a Gamelan effect. When the brass join in, the track takes on a Latin feel.

Evergreen

This song has a psychedelic feel to it. The mood is "Strawberry Fields" and "Champagne Supernova". The filtered vocals in the verse give way to a full sweeping chorus.
