This is a general purpose heat treatable stainless steel. It is used for anything from fasteners to jet engine parts.
This is a Martensitic stainless steel
Heat Treatment - Tempering within the range of 750 to 1075oF should be avoided. This is due to the low impact charateristics. To harden this material, heat to 1700 to 1850oF and quench in oil or water. Then temper the steel to achieve desired charateristics.
Welding - Suited for all normal methods of welding if the material is preheated to 300 - 500oF. Post weld annealing is required to reduce cracking. If the material will be heat treated after welding, use AISI 410 filler material. But if a ductile joint is required and there is going to be no heat treatment applied after welding, use AISI 308 or 309 filler material.
Heat Resistance - This material preforms well if exposed continuously to temperatures of 1300oF or if only exposed intermittently, 1500oF.
