Lectric Leopard Manual

Wiring diagram

The Lectric Leopard is engineered to give economical, trouble free service over many years if operated cautiously and in the recommended manner. Remember, electric vehicles do have limitations and must not be considered as direct replacements for higher horsepower gasoline-driven autos. Electric vehicle speeds are lower, hill climbing must be done more slowly, and acceleration is not as brisk. However, when used within its capacity, on short run commuting and local delivery or errand service, the Lectric Leopard can be enjoyed for its economy and absence of noise and air pollution.

Electric vehicles are synonomous with "Silent Transportation". U.S. ELECTRICAR CORPORATION asks that all drivers be alert to the visually impaired, the aurally impaired and others who may rely on the noise produced by conventional gasoline-driven auto.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Insert key into lock on steering post and turn clockwise. The audible click is the master contactor energizing.
  2. Gear Selection
    1. First Gear is used on-rough terrain and for starting on hills.
    2. Second Gear is for starting on level terrain and for acceleration into moving traffic. Depress clutch, select second gear, depress accelerator to the.second step and release clutch slowly.
    3. Third Gear should be used for most highway driving.
    4. Fourth Gear may be used for maximum speed on level terrain when it is anticipated that driving wi1l be uninterrupted.
    5. Reverse Gear, of course, is for moving backward. Depress clutch, select "R" for reverse, depress accelerator to the first step and release clutch.
    6. Remove hand brake before attempting to drive the car.
  3. To start the vehicle forward, depress the clutch and place the gear selector in either first or second gear, then depress the accelerator to the first step (24 volts) and let the clutch out. When the vehicle starts to move approx. 5 mph, depress the clutch, then depress the accelerator to the second step (48 volts) and release the clutch. For faster acceleration, select second gear, depress the accelerator to the second step and release the clutch.
  4. To upshift or downshift,. KEEP ACCELERATOR DEPRESSED to the second step, depress clutch, shift gear and release clutch.
  5. NOTE: Prior to shifting CHECK AMMETER. The AMMETER should read at 200 or below before shifting into a higher gear. Should the AMMETER read at 300 or in the RED ZONE, the vehicle should be downshifted to the next lower gear.

BATTERY STATE METERS

AMMETER: This meter indicates current going from the batteries to the motor. DO NOT operate the vehicle in such a way that the needle remains in the red portion for more than thirty seconds at a time.
VOLTMETER: This is a combination Voltmeter and Fuel Gauge. This meter indicates the voltage at the motor. When driving on level road with the speed control pedal fully depressed and the AMMETER reading between 150 and 200, your Voltmeter can be used to estimate the amount of energy or fuel remaining in the batteries. The closer the needle is to the red area the less the energy reserve. When the needle has reached the RED ZONE, only 2 or 3 miles may be driven safely. NOTE: DRIVING WITH THE VOLTMETER INDICATOR IN THE RED ZONE WILL VOID YOUR BATTERY WARRANTY.

CHARGING BATTERIES

When recharging batteries it is important to take the following steps in the exact order as they appear here in the owner's manual.
  1. Raise hood and place "RUN-CHARGE' switch on the charger in the CHG position.
  2. Plug charger into a three (3) prong 115-120 Voltage wall socket that has a 20 ampere circuit breaker.
  3. Adjust timer for appropriate charge time (full charge equals 10 hours from a "CLEAN" 20 ampere circuit)
  4. When charging is finished and the timer has shut off, disconnect the plug from the vehicle and return the charger to the RUN position. If you desire to drive your car before a full charge is completed, TURN TIMER OFF, disconnect cord and place switch in the RUN position.
  5. Charge at the rate of one hour for each four or five miles driven. DO NOT OVERCHARGE. It the timer has been properly set on the charger, the battery electrolyte will bubble visibly only during the last hour of charging time.
  6. Under average line voltage conditions the charger ammeter will indicate an initial output of 40 to 50 amperes. If the line voltage is exceptionally high and the initial charge rate is higher than 45 amperes, the HI-LO switch on the chargershould be placed in the LO position in order to avoid damage to components. If the ammeter indicator still remains above 45 amperes, a 25 to 50 foot extension cord may be added between the charger and.the wall plug to reduce the charge rate.
  7. To INCREASE the charging rate, move the blue/white wire to the next LOWEST numbered terminal at the rear of the charger, To DECREASE the charging rate, move the blue/white wire to the next HIGHEST numbered terminal.
  8. A floating ball hydrometer is furnished for checking the state of charge or discharge of the batteries. Directions for reading are printed on the outside of the instrument.

NOTE: OVERCHARGING YOUR BATTERIES WILL VOID BATTERY WARRANTY.

ELECTROLYTE SERVICING

Under normal driving and charging conditions, electrolyte levels need only be checked and distilled water added every one thousand miles. Electrolyte levels should always be above the battery plates but should not extend into the neck of the filler holes, as it may spatter during charging. Add only DISTILLED WATER to both the motive and accessory batteries.

NOTE: DO NOT OVERCHARGE. IF YOU ARE ADDING ONE OR MORE QUARTS OF DISTILLED WATER EVERY 500 MILES, THERE IS CAUSE FOR CONCERN REGARDING OVERCHARGING OF YOUR BATTERIES.

BREAKING IN

The batteries must-be "cycled" several times before optimum mileage is realized. Usually the car must be driven 400 to 500 miles before the battery plates have become "hard" enough to deliver power for a range in excess of 50 miles on level terrain.

HEATER

The heater operates from the main batteries and of course will decrease the range of the vehicle when operated continuously. Preheating the car by turning on the battery charger and operating the heater with the household electric current for ten or fifteen minutes before using the vehicle, will add to your driving comfort without sacrificing range. The heater switch is located on the face of the heater enclosure and is turned "ON" by placing it in the "UP" position.

REPLACING 906-004 FUSE

The 906-004 fuse is located on the master contactor in the front under-hood battery compartment. It is designed to blow under excessive load conditions thereby protecting cables and other electrical components. Excessive load conditions are created when the vehicle is driven improperly. Should you repeatedly blow this fuse, please contact your Lectric Leopard agent where the vehicle was purchased.

To replace the fuse, take the following steps:

  1. Remove the wing nuts holding the insulated cover, lift and remove.
  2. Using the special 7/16" insulated wrench supplied with the extra fuse fuse kit, loosen and remove the two nuts/bolts holding the fuse and remove the blown fuse halves.
  3. Install a new fuse and place the two lock washers directly on top. Replace the two nuts and tighten securely with the wrench.
  4. Replace the cover and wing nuts.

TEMPERATURE AND CLIMATE

The performance of the Lectric Leopard is greatly affected by the temperature of the batteries. Greatest driving range is available when the battery temperature is 80 F degrees or more. At 0 F degrees the amount of energy available is barely half that at 80 F degrees and the range is reduced correspondingly. However, since heat is generated in the batteries during the charging cycle, this drawback can.be overcome on many occasions. By planning ahead, the charge cycle can be arranged, in the cold weather, to shut off shortly before the vehicle is to be used and little decrease and little decrease in performance will be experienced.

TOWING

If it becomes necessary to tow the vehicle with a tow truck or a conventional towing service, THE CAR MUST BE TOWED FROM THE REAR. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL VOID THE WARRANTY ON THE AXLES. The vehicle may be towed short distances, using a tow bar attached to the two front tie downs. Be certain the gear shift lever is in NEUTRAL and the Parking BRAKE OFF. Place key in the LOCK and key to the OFF position, leaving key in place. This will unlock the steering wheel.

[text missing]...THEN OFF TO UNLOCK TIIE STEERING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN TOW. NOTE: TOWING SPEEDS SHOULD NOT EXCEED 50 MPH.

When towing the vehicle for distances greater than 100 miles it is necessary to perform the following:

  1. After towing the car for 100 miles, stop at a rest area or an equally convenient location.
  2. Place the gear shift-lever in first or second gear, TOW THE VEHICLE 150 to 200 FEET WITH THE GEAR ENGAGED. This will maintain lubrication in the transmission.
  3. Before continuing, and after step # 2, place the gear shift lever in the neutral position and continue towing for another 100 miles.
NOTE: FAILURE TO TOW THE VEHICLE IN THE RECOMMENDED MANNER WILL VOID YOUR TRANSMISSION AND AXLE WARRANTY.
CAUTIONS
  1. NEVER attempt.to move gear shift lever when motor is running without first depressing the clutch. Wait for the motor to come to a complete stop before changing gear positions, unless the clutch is depressed.
  2. NEVER operate the vehicle for more than thirty seconds with the AMPERE needle in the red portion of the dial. Should this occur during hill climbing, immediately downshift to the next lowest gear. Should the AMPERE needle again move into the red portion of the dial, downshift again. Operation of the vehicle with the AMPERE indicator in the red zone will result in a blown fuse. Replacement of fuse described on page 10.
  3. ALWAYS turn off key switch when parked. Failure to do this will result in a discharged accessory battery and possible damage to components. REMOVE KEY FROM LOCK WHEN CHARGING.
  4. NEVER continue to operate the vehicle for more than two miles after the VOLTMETER indicator has fallen into the RED ZONE during driving on level terrain at maximum speed. Discharging the batteries deeply by continuing to operate in this red zone will greatly reduce their life expectancy. Stop and arrange to charge the batteries. NOTE: DRIVING WITH THE VOLTMETER INDICATOR IN THE RED ZONE WILL VOID YOUR BATTERY WARRANTY.
  5. Be sure to keep all tires inflated to 32 P.S.I. Failure to do this will decrease vehicle range significantly.
  6. ALWAYS USE BRAKE when the vehicle is parked. There is no braking by compression as in a gasoline driven vehicle.

BRAKES

All 952 model Lectric Leopard's have standard non-assisted front disc and rear drum disc brakes.

All 953 model Lectric Leopard's have vacuum assisted brakes. Since there is no natural vacuum generated in an electric vehicle, a vacuum pump is installed in the front:engine bay. This vacuum assist operates when depressing the brakes (key on). A slight drumming sound emanating from the front of the car may be detected when working the brakes. This is the pump.
