· What is NCTM? Founded in 1920, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is the largest mathematics organization in the world. |
· Purpose NCTM has been dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of mathematics from preschool through postsecondary schools for over 75 years. |
· History of NCTM Prior to the most recent Standards publication, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics 2000, NCTM published three Standards which laid the foundation for the 2000 Standards. They are: "The The Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) presents recommendations for improving and updating the mathematics curriculum and the evaluation of student’s achievement. " (NCTM at a Glance, www.nctm.org). "The Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991) offers specific suggestions for how mathematics teachers can create successive learning environments for every students and promote their own professional growth." (NCTM at a Glance, www.nctm.org). "The Assessment Standards for School Mathematics (1995) describes ways to have a comprehensive mathematics assessment program and provides criteria for judging the quality of mathematics assessment." · NCTM's Other Publications · NCTM’s Addenda Series brings the Standards into the classroom.
