• Laran gifts and laran training: Trained as a mechanic at Tramontana Tower. Jing-Mei's laran has some unique features, due to her long-term training in Tai Chi and other disciplines before she went to the Tower (see below).

• Appearance: Exotic (for Darkover, anyway); light golden skin and long, straight, shiny black hair. She has slanted, almost feline, hazel eyes. She is very slender and graceful, and of average height, which makes her taller than her father.

• Family: Her father, Chen Soo, and her mother, M'lorya n'ha Callisu. They have recently been transferred to the Terran facility in Thendara.

• Other Information: Jing-Mei's parents are freemates, both employed by the Terrans. Her father is an engineer; her mother works as a guide and interpreter. Jing-Mei's laran surfaced when she was thirteen; her threshold sickness was so bad that she was sent to Tramontana for treatment after Terran medicine failed to help her. At the Tower, they discovered that her laran had some unusual features; she had an high level of clairvoyance, and along with strong telekinesis she had an affinity for fire and electricity. She was also able to "become one with the silence" (as she put it) and become invisible and inaudible. When Jing-Mei decided to stay at the Tower and become a matrix worker, there were some objections due to her mixed heritage. However, Tramontana accepted her on the grounds that her mother was a Renunciate, and by law her father's people had no claim on her. Besides, they were interested in studying her laran.
