John came to America at age 18 on the ship "The Exchange" which sailed fr
om Staines, England and landed at Perth Amboy, New Jersey harbor on the 19
th of December in 1683. He was one of 47 persons deported from Scotla
nd to serve a term of 4 years in theAmerican colonies. After servic
e, he bought land at New Aberdeen-Topanemus, and on Millstone Brook in Ea
st Jersey and other places. He settled on the Topanemus tract near Marlbor
o, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was a Quaker but changed to the Episcop
al faith when George Heith left the Friends and took orders in the Episcop
al Church.
There is confusion about who is the mother of John. Some sources list Jonn
et Bannatyne and some list Agnes Clerihew. There isconfusion about wh
en he married each wife. Please investigate this info. onyour own and dr
aw your own conclusions.

ts to claim an estate left her by her mother's brother, JohnBernard. S
he was the widow of Mordecia Bedient at this time. She brought withher th
eir four sons Morgan, Thomas, John and Mordecia Bedient. One account menti
oned that Mary lived in Scotland before coming to America. She married Jo
hn Baird and had five more sons with him. Records also show she owned (
by inheritance) a large tract of land in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
