Announcement:

Engagement of Melanie & Rodney

on Sunday, July 26, 1998

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, at The Renaissance Faire in Sterling, New York, Rodney Schmitz proposed to Melanie Mattison. As this beautiful story unfolds, close your eyes and imagine Rodney all decked out as a prince of the Renaissance Period. the timing was just right! Melanie was not around and the Mayor of Warwick (the name of the town that the festival was set in)walked by. Rodney casually walked up to the Mayor to seek his assistance and set the scene! When Melanie returned, Rodney took her hand and they started walking toward Lover's Bridge. As they approached, the Mayor loudly proclaimed, "Here ye! Here ye! Lords & Ladies! I would like to introduce Lord Rodney and Lady Melanie for a most happy announcement!" Of course, Melanie was shocked and couldn't figure out how he knew their names! Rodney proceeded to escort Lady Melanie on to the Bridge and to the Proposal Bench. Rodney then proceeded to propose to Melanie, loudly proclaiming his love and devotion to her in Olde English! "Lords & Ladies, I ask of you to be witness to my proclamation of love for this woman, whom I have loved for the past year and a half." The shock and tears started to flow and Rodney asks, "What is this? For it is I who has butterflies in my stomach, fluttering like the wind. I shall love you and only you, this I proclaim." He then gets down on one knee, "I ask you if thou wilst marry me?" Melanie, still in shock over it all, couldn't think of how to respond in Olde English, so she just shook her head. But of course, that wasn't enough for Rodney and he said aloud "No, I need to hear the words, what say you? Wilst thou marry me?" Somehow, Melanie managed to find the words to say yes! What a beautiful sight! Everyone who had gathered around began clapping! Much to our surprise, later in the day, we encountered people expressing their congratulations to Melanie and Rodney. One person in particular told us that she and her friends were watching a Renaissance skit nearby when they heard the proclamation by the Mayor. They proceeded to check out the event that was taking place on the Bridge thinking that it was another Renaissance skit. As the proposal unfolded, and the tears began flowing, they quickly realized it was not a Renaissance skit, rather a true proposal of marriage! Of course, all of this was very spontaneous! Luckily, Mom and Dad had a camera with them! Since none of us were prepared, this moment will last forever in our hearts, though not on video film! In fact, there is more to this beautiful day! Our camping weekend to the Harbor Festival in Oswego and the Renaissance Faire had been planned for some time. Rodney has had visions of proposing to Melanie at the Renaissance Faire for some time, but gave up that idea when the engagement ring that had been ordered did not come in before the trip. So, disappointed, he decided it would have to take place at some other time and place. Much to his surprise, as we were enjoying the vendors at the Harbor Festival, he spotted a ring that resembled the ring on order. That is when the plot started to unfold. After much thought, he decided to purchase the $15.00 ring and go ahead with his plan! The timing was right and the day was beautiful!
